Congratulations to Dr. Pedro Campos, our ultrasound fellow for the 2012-2013 academic year. Pedro is currently a chief resident at Jacobi/ Montefiore in New York. He is well respected for his clinical skills and enthusiasm for teaching. |

Ellen Weber, MD, spoke at the British Museum at a symposium in London on Crowding and Quality of Care AND chatted with Princess Anne. The two-day symposium, co-hosted by the UK College of Emer- gency Medicine and the International Federation of Emergency Medicine was entitled "Defining Quality in Emergency Care." The Princess Royal, a patron of the College, gave a keynote address, then listened from the front row to lectures by Ellen Weber (US), Suzanne Mason (UK), and MIchael Schull (Canada) all of whom for the first (and only time) in their lives, began their talks with "Your royal highness....." During the coffee break that followed, Princess Anne shook hands and chatted with each of the three presenters.
Robert Rodriguez, MD, gave Grand Rounds at Highland last month.
Greg Hendey, MD, presented two lectures at the UCSF Topics in EM course in SF in November and gave four lectures at ACEP in SF in October.
Danielle Campagne, MD, presented a non moderated poster at ACEP last month in the teaching fellowship section.
Kenny Banh, MD, presented four lectures at UCSF, Natividad Medical Center, ACEP, and CSU Fresno.

After 19 years at SFGH, Karl Sporer, MD, is retiring from his position as Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine, Vice Chair for EMS & Disaster Medicine, and Medical Director of the SFFD. He will begin his new position as Medical Director of the Alameda County EMS Agency in December of this year.
John Brown, MD, has accepted the position of Interim Director of the EMS/Disaster Medicine Fellowship based at SFGH.
Michelle Lin, MD, has been nominated for the UCSF chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society Class of 2012.
Jeff Tabas, MD, is one of five members representing UCSF at Mayo Clinic's Continuous Patient Care Improvement Summit on December 1-2. The purpose is to discuss the implementation and implications of Maintenance of Certification across the spectrum of physician specialties.
David Thompson, MD, is an invited speaker at the 10th annual UCSF Neurotrauma Symposium on December 12th. His topic will be "Traumatic Brain Injuries: Prehospital & Emergency Care."
Reena Duseja, MD, received a perfect priority score on her career development grant to AHRQ entitled "Understanding and Risk-Adjusting Return Visits to the Emergency Department."

Join us in congratulating Bory Kea for receiving the Best Resident Research Paper presented at the 2011 Research Forum. The title of her paper was "Does Chest CT Detect Clinically Significant Injuries Missed on Chest."
Kennedy Hall received the CTSI Fall 2011 Resident Research Funding Award for his project, "EMS-STARS: Emergency Medical Services Superuser Associations, a Retrospective Study."

Muhimbili Emergency Department News

The Muhimbili Emergency Department made a strong showing at the Emergency Medicine in the Developing World conference in Capetown, South Africa, November 15-17. There were 800 conference attendees overall and six presentations from the Muhimbili ED. Teri Reynolds, MD, and Natalia Lobue, our Director of Clinical Operations, presented on the development of emergency medicine in Tanzania; Marwa Obogo presented on the emergency nurse training program; our chief residents Juma Mfinanga and Hendry Sawe (pictured) presented on our trauma database and ultrasound programs, respectively; among our registrars, Sherrin Kassmali presented on our mass casualty response to the Gongo la Mboto munitions explosions and Mohammedsuhel Chagani presented on the formation of the Emergency Medicine Association of Tanzania (see group photo of EMAT doctors and nurses).
Also at the meeting, Chief Resident Hendry Sawe and Residency Program Director Teri Reynolds were elected to the executive committee of the African Federation of Emergency Medicine. Reynolds served as co-chair of the AFEM international consensus conference on Defining the Role of Emergency Medicine in Africa, with over 100 participants. We held our first in-person meeting of the project leads for the Muhimbili ED Academic Consortium (pictured here with our Head of Department, Prof. Victor Mwafongo; not pictured is Mike Runyon, the lead from Carolinas Medical Center).
