We are happy to announce that the ACGME Residency Review Committee has granted the UCSF-SFGH EM Residency Program five-year full accreditation! The next Site Visit will be in September 2016. Special thanks to everyone who helped make this possible. We could not have done this without your support.

New Fellow

Dr. Starr (Roneesha) Starr KnightKnight has joined the DEM at UCSF as a Clinical Fellow in emergency ultrasound having completed her residency at Highland Hospital.  Starr is from the Los Angeles inner city and has dedicated herself to serving indigent and underrepresented communities locally and abroad.  She is a mentor for undergraduate minorities through the Physicians Medical Forum as well as Mentoring in Medicine.  She has served as an ultrasound instructor in developing nations such as Kenya and El Salvador as well as more developed ones.  She enjoys camping, live music, festivals, basketball, running, drum circles, and going out.

Welcome (again) to Dr. Eric Suess and Dr. Melanie Watts who joined our group in September at UCSF Medical Center. Dr. Suess will also be working at SFGH.  (See last month's newsletter to read more about them.)

Faculty Announcements
Dr. Jacqueline Nemer is teaching the Debriefing Workshop for Orientation Day at the Teaching and Learning Center of UCSF on Oct 11th from 3:00-4:30pm.

Dr. Jeff Tabas
is Acting Chair of the CME governing board. He is covering the CME office while Dr. Baron is on sabbatical for the year.

 

Dr. Jeff Tabas was invited to be a member of UCSF's medical education monthly leadership meeting chaired by the new Vice Dean of Education, Catherine Lucey.

Lectures / Presentations

Dr. Renee Hsia is invited to speak at a press and policy briefing held by Health Affairs on "Disparities in Health and Health Care" in Washington DC on October 6, 2011, on the topic of geographical access to trauma centers.

 

Dr. Renee Hsia will present her poster, "Effect of Trauma Center Closures on In-Hospital Mortality," at the American College of Surgeons National Meeting in San Francisco on October 26.  

 

Dr. Renee Hsia will be giving Grand Rounds at OHSU on November 2 on "The 10,000-ft view of emergency care in the United States: How it affects everyone," in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Maria Raven was invited to speak in New York on September 23 at a forum on Supportive Housing's role in redesigning healthcare for the most vulnerable hosted by the Supportive Housing Network of New York and Common Ground. She was part of panel which discussed "Re-Imagining Healthcare for the Most Vulnerable: What is Supportive Housing's Role? "
