They will be acknowledged at the Academy's Annual Celebration on September 19, 2011.

New Faculty

The DEM would like to welcome two new faculty joining us this month.

He enjoys running, swimming, soccer, golf and travel.

Dr. Melanie Watts will be based at Moffitt.  She joins us from ACMC where she completed her residency in July 2011. Dr. Watts attended a combined MD program at Dartmouth Medical School and Brown Medical School and received her MD degree in 2006. She also completed a one year internship as a resident at Harvard - Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2007. She speaks Spanish and French and her special interests include: Emergency Ultrasound, International Medicine and Wilderness Medicine.

Tanzania Project

Under Teri Reynolds' leadership, residents and faculty now have a global health opportunity in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The following is a brief description of Bory Kea's experience there.

There are very few words that describe the amazing experience and opportunity I had in the Emergency Medicine Department (lovingly called the EMD) at Muhimibili National Hospital, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It was not only a culmination of residency with the evaluation of incredibly sick and needy patients (from cerebral malaria, end-stage AIDS, hypertensive strokes, kwashiorkor, severe anemia/hypoglycemia, to severe pediatric burns), but also rewarding teaching eager residents and nurses thirsting for knowledge, and of course, renewing when patients and family members are truly appreciative of everything you do for them. It made me remember why I wanted to become a doctor.
