| Achievements | | Congratulations to Natalya Khait! Natalya received the School Of Medicine Great People Award for her contribution to the successful implementation of the EDIS at SFGH. She worked tirelessly on the conversion process, user training and ongoing monitoring. The Great People Award recognizes four employees each quarter whose daily contributions highlight the great diversity of work within the SOM. Dean Hawgood announced her selection as a recipient of the award saying, "Your work serves as a model for exhibiting qualities and values essential to making the School of Medicine a great place to work." From everyone in DEM, thank you Natalya for all that you do to make DEM successful! |
New Faculty and Staff

The DEM would like to welcome two new faculty based clinically at Moffitt.

Jahan Fahimi completed his residency and fellowship at ACMC Highland. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Epidemiology at UC Berkeley School of Public Health. His medical interests include ultrasound and international EM as well as research in the field of social epidemiology. He enjoys traveling, surfing, biking, and microbrews.
Maria Raven has returned to the Bay Area after spending ten years in New York at NYU as a resident, fellow, and Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine. She and her husband live in San Francisco with their two children, Max, five, and Sophie, almost three, and are looking forward to adding a dog to the family.
We also welcome three new faculty based clinically at SFGH.
David Thompson received his MD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and MPH at Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his residency at Denver Health. He is interested in developing a research career and pursuing outside grant funding for investigation while continuing to practice and teach at SFGH.
Derrick Lung just completed his fellowship in Medical Toxicology at UCSF and will continue as a toxicologist on staff at the California Poison Control System, San Francisco Division. He and his wife Audrey are expecting their second son in September.
Viraj Lakdawala attended St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. He completed his Residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in Bronx, New York. Joining the DEM staff as Executive Assistant to Dr. Callaham is Karen Lau. A career UC employee, Karen worked in the General Counsel's office in Oakland as an Executive Secretary. She will serve as editor for the Newsletter so please send her an email about any professional accomplishments (publications, awards, research grants, exceptional clinical saves, etc.) as soon as they occur. |
Tanzania Project Launched

Our partnership with the Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has launched with Teri Reynolds on the ground as Residency Director and our department's first visiting resident (Bory Kea) and attending (John Brown) there in July. Jenny Wilson lands August 1st.
The Muhimbili Residents just completed their first cycle of University exams for the first Emergency Residency in Tanzania!

Robert Rodriguez is one of nine University of California PIs to receive a grant from the UC Center for Health Quality and Innovation for his proposal aimed at reducing unnecessary chest CT in blunt trauma patients. Read more about it here.
Karl Sporer was invited to be a member of the ACEP Committee to draft clinical guidelines on the use of opioids in acute and chronic pain in the emergency department. He attended the first meeting in Dallas on July 19.
Robert Rodriguez was quoted in an article in Emergency Medicine News regarding homeless needs in the ED study.

Hemal Kanzaria was one of 26 physicians selected for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Fellowship. After he completes his residency, he will move to Los Angeles where he will participate in a two-year fellowship. To read more about it, click here.
