The DEM has been chosen for the next Endowed Chair in the Academy of Medical Educators. The chair will be endowed for five years for $500,000 (half from the DEM, and half from the Academy), and the interest will support special projects. The Academy will select the recipient from our existing Academy members.

Congratulations to Ellen Weber, whose abstract for the SAEM Annual Meeting in June is one of the five out of 500 accepted for the Plenary Session!

Renee Hsia's newly released study was featured in ACEP's daily news brief's lead story, as well as in California Health Line and Health Day: http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=650341

The DEM would like to welcome Dr. Maria Raven, who will be joining the faculty in July as an Assistant Professor, based clinically at Moffitt. Maria is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Bellevue Hospital Center/NYU School of Medicine, where she completed her EM residency and the NYU/CDC Fellowship in Medicine and Public Health Research. She practices clinically at Bellevue and conducts research focused on high cost, heavy-users of the health care system. She has lived in New York City for 10 years with her husband and her two children, Max, five, and Sophie, almost three. Maria was born in Tucson, AZ, and went to college at UC Berkeley where she was a history major. After college, she worked at the UCSF AIDS Health Project for a year before moving to Portland where she completed the joint MD/MPH program. After a decade in New York City, Maria and her family look forward to their move back to the Bay Area this summer and to getting a dog. She loves health policy, reading semi-dark novels or non-fiction (just finished Just Kids and The Road), travel, art, music, being outdoorsandspending time with her family. She is overjoyed that the parks in the Bay Area actually have grass, and is excited to be able to go to PeetsCoffee at least twice a day as she takes her cappuccinos very seriously.

The DEM would also like to welcome Dr. David Thompson, who will be joining the faculty as an SFGH Assistant Clinical Professor, effective July 1. Dr. Thompson received his undergraduate degrees from University of San Francisco majoring in Psychology and B.A. in Education from the Brown University. He received his MD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and then completed an MPH program at Harvard School of Public Health. He is currently finishing his Residency Program at Denver Heath. In addition to receiving excellent clinical training, Dr. Thompson has been trained in research methods through his master's degree and has demonstrated a track record of productivity in academic writing and emergency medicine research. By the end of this academic year he will have 6 academic writing projects completed and have given 2 national presentations. He comes across as highly self-motivated and can contribute in diverse areas of academic medicine. He is a member of American College of Emergency Physicians and American Academy of Emergency Medicine since 2007. Dr. Thompson is interested in developing a research career and pursue outside grant funding for investigation, always while continuing to practice and teach. The two areas he is most interested in investigating are characterizing shock states using bedside testing and traumatic brain injury. Dr. Thompson will play an important role in developing the program emphasizing Neuro-critical emergencies at San Francisco General Hospital. His personal interests are Snowshoeing, Snowboarding, Rock Climbing, Road Biking, Backpacking, Banjo, and International Cuisine.

Prasanthi Ramanujam will be co-chairing the grant writing workshop to be held the day before the SAEM Annual Meeting in Boston.

Teri Reynolds has been appointed to the Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) Research Planning subcommittee. The LRDP will serve as a guide to UCSF's physical development through the year 2030.

Congratulations to David Duong for completing the ACEP Teaching Fellowship!

Kenny Banh and Danielle Campagne of Fresno are attending the 2010-11 American College of Emergency Physicians Teaching Fellowship in Dallas, Texas.

Jeffrey Tabas has been appointed to the DECIDE 2 consortium - an AHRQ committee tasked with establishing the comparative effectiveness research agenda in cardiovascular disease. I am the emergency physician representative as well as the ACEP representative.

The Second Annual Northern California Emergency Ultrasound Course was held March 9-11, 2011 in Monterey, California. Rimon Bengiamin, Carolyn Chooljian, Brian Chinnock, Warren Wiechmann, Martine Sargeant, and instructors from around the country taught the course. 116 registrants attended the two-day course and approximately 60% of them stayed for a third day of advanced workshops. Overall, the course was a great success, growing 20% this year, and we look forward to continuing growth.

The Third Annual High Sierra Wildernss Medicine Conference was held March 2-4, 2011 in Yosemite, California. Lori Weichenthal, Susanne Spano, Danielle Campagne, Brian Horan, Marc Shalit, Roger Mortimer, Geoff Stroh and Rais Vohra from UCSF Fresno and Patil Armenian from UCSF taught the course. The course grew this year as well with 71 registrants attending the 2 day course. Also in attendance were fellows and residents from the aforementioned programs, and the course was very well-received.

Notes from the Chair

Report on Steering Committee actions:

The Steering Committee is the advisory committee that shapes departmental policy; its members are Drs. Yeh, Fee, Sporer, Barton, Weber, Promes, Hendey, and Callaham. All faculty are encouraged to provide feedback or discuss issues with them at any time.

In the last 2 months the committee agreed to extend Tracy Salkowitz's contract through the end of the year to continue the momentum of the strategic planning from last fall's retreat, including developing further communications tools beyond the monthly newsletter. The committee also decided to add a 0.4 FTE research assistant position to assist Sarika and deal with the ever-increasing research workload. Dr. Weber is working with the research faculty in a detailed process to develop a thorough overview of the needs of both research faculty and the department, and a strategy for integrating the two.

The committee decided to move forward with supporting the Tanzania rotation as our official department global health initiative for residents and faculty. The committee approved uniform guidelines for Academic Support Funds (ASF) for UCSF DEM faculty, after a survey of other institutions. Based on the survey model, each full time faculty member will receive $5000 a year for academic support, will receive a computer (and support), and group membership in SAEM. (Half time will receive $2500). The funds can be used for any expenditure approved by UCSF regulations, and unused funds will roll over into the next fiscal year. Expenditures above and beyond this amount (for example to travel to present original research) should be covered by other sources of funding, or will be reviewed by the chief of service on a case by case basis.

Finally, it is the goal of Chris Barton and myself to try to implement the first payments under our new incentive plan this summer. The exact incentive pool is not yet known (being dependent on our annual fiscal performance) but we hope to try to reward the faculty for their extra efforts. So, start thinking in what areas you performed beyond expectations this past year, for discussion at your annual review.
