UUA TRUSTEE TIDBITS

by Joan Lund
Over the past two years since Rev. Peter Morales was elected UUA President and the financial challenges of our economy continue to press, several changes at the Association's staff level were made to focus on three areas: growth of our movement, prophetic social action, and the creation of a new ministry for the new century.  Read more . . .

Domelight Changes

Beginning with next month's issue, the Domelight will get a new look and a new email channel of distribution. If you currently receive the Domelight by email, your address and mailing will automatically move.  If you do not have a computer, you will continue to receive a hard copy of each issue, according to your subscription.

Because of the technical conversion and because our editor, Liz Bleu, will be on vacation, the copy deadline for next month's issue will be Sunday, July 17th.  Harriet Blymiller, Mary Francis and Ron Hammerle will serve as the editorial team in making the conversion.

This is one of several changes we are making in anticipation of the dedication, opening and programming for our new building, of the beginning of new fall programs and a community forum, and of a new way of welcoming and staying in touch with guests, friends and members of the congregation as we grow.

Each of our current channels of communication, including the Yahoo egroup, will continue without interruption.  This new channel of communcation will supplement and enhance the needs of our members and friends.

When the change takes place, you will receive a welcoming message and invitation to "update your profile."  Your profile is a personalized way of expressing your interest in specific programs or activities of the church.  All of your current information will still be available, including that of friends and members without computer access.

The Communications Committee members hope you will find this new system to be helpful as our church grows and moves toward a new era.  Once you experience the new format for two issues, please let us know what you think.

Ron Hammerle, Chairman.  Communications Committee.

From the President's Desk

As I write these few words, I am getting ready to leave for General Assembly 2011 in Charlotte, NC.  Our movement is turning 50 this year. I am sure the attendees will be able to share their experiences with the rest of the congregation on our return.

Tom Raffel, a member of the board till recently, is getting ready to leave as well. He has found a teaching job in Pennsylvania. His partner Cindy, who has also become part of our UU family, is leaving, too. It is comforting to know they will have each other's support and care on this new exciting venture.

Tom is wonderful and a caring friend to many of us; he has been a very active member of our church. He was a remarkable member of the Board of Trustees. Tom was always willing to volunteer, assist, and help. We have a new multi-purpose building in our back yard partly due to his steadfast efforts and dedication.  I know I speak on behalf of everyone when I say that we wish Tom and Cindy lots of luck. They will always have a home here at UUCT.

The Board of Trustees have selected Elise Richardson to serve on the Board till the end of Tom's term. Elise has over a 25-year history as a UU. She also served 5 years on the Board at her last church. We are delighted to welcome her as our newest board member.

The Board retreat will take place in July. It will give us the opportunity to get to know each other better. We would like to introduce the newly elected BOT members to their various responsibilities, our polity, and UU governance. The Board will review the amended buildings-and-grounds use policy. Furthermore, we would like to discuss the appropriate process toward an updated prioritized list for campus improvement. Campus improvement is under Board responsibility, but it is essential to gather input and ideas from the congregation.

In community,

A Month of Sundays at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa

Services begin at 11 a.m.

July 3:  Wilderness as Sacred Space                                        Russell Kirby, Ph.D.

As a society we have contradictory perspectives on what we mean by 'wilderness' and how its presence affects our daily lives.  Some see wilderness 'preserves' as spaces of spiritual value while others see them as places to be enjoyed for recreational and other uses.  We will explore some of these contradictions as well as broader ideas about what makes places or areas 'sacred' for us personally or as a community.

Dr. Russell S. Kirby, a lifelong UU and Vice-President of the UUCT Board of Trustees, is a professor of public health at the University of South Florida. His thoughts often return to his academic training in human geography.

July 10:  The Greatest Story Ever Told                                        Grantford Wilson

We Unitarian Universalists are at the forefront of creating the great continuing narrative about cosmic history and evolutionary development for the most realistic religious belief system of the human race.  The more impassioned it becomes, the more it will touch the hearts of humanity.

Grantford Wilson has been an active member of the UUCT congregation for many years.

July 17:  Follow Your Bliss: An Encore                               Rev. Dr. Sara Zimmerman

"Follow your bliss," Joseph Campbell says, and when you do, you put yourself on "a kind of track that has been there all the while waiting for you."  When our 2010-2011 ministerial intern Jay Wolin invited Rev. Zimmerman to offer the sermon at his service of ordination at First Unitarian Orlando in June, she asked him if he had a theme to suggest.  He offered Joseph Campbell's words about bliss as a theme.  The resulting sermon was thought to be encore-worthy by those in attendance at Rev. Wolin's ordination.

Rev. Dr. Sara Zimmerman has been the settled minister at UUCT and a member of the congregation since 2007.

July 24:   An Atheist Comes to Church                              Ralph Lehman, M.D.

Why do we come to church?  Do we come to church for the same reasons?

Neurosurgeon Ralph Lehman has been an active member of the UUCT for many years.

July 31:  Reflecting on General Assembly 2011                   Rev. Dr. Sara Zimmerman

Rev. Zimmerman will share her opinions and reflections about GA business.  She will invite the others who attended this year's UU Association's General Assembly in Charlotte, NC, to contribute their thoughts.  They will share stories of their experiences and their opinions of the decisions made.  What is likely to be the enduring significance of these decisions on our faith movement?
