Hocking College Changing Benefit Programs
The Hocking College Benefits Advisory Committee (BAC) is comprised of representatives from all three bargaining units as well as non-bargaining employees.  This committee has provided valuable feedback on our current health plans and vendors and assisted Human Resources and NEEBCo, our employee benefits broker, with formulating new options for our employees to consider for this open enrollment period.

After careful consideration, all three bargaining units voted to transition from Medical Mutual to Anthem for our health insurance coverage effective November 1, 2012.  This transition will also include non-bargaining employees.  As many of you learned through the discussion meetings this week, there would have been an increase in the health insurance premium regardless of which vendor was selected.  The health insurance premium did increase this year by 4.4%.  We will ensure that any services applied to your deductible and co-insurance from January 1, 2012, to October 31, 2012 will be applied to your Anthem deductible/co-insurance.  This is an item that will be discussed during the employee meetings this week.

Also, due to employee feedback, Hocking College will be moving our vision coverage from Medical Mutual to Vision Service Plan (VSP) as well as transferring our Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) from Wageworks to Chard Snyder.

All employees must attend one of the information sessions below, as new enrollment forms must be completed and returned to Human Resources no later than Monday, October 15, 2012.  This deadline is necessary in order to give Anthem, VSP, and Chard Snyder time to process the enrollment elections and mail new insurance cards to members.  Detailed plan information will be distributed and reviewed during these sessions.

Medical insurance, Vision, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Dental and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) will be reviewed at all of the sessions.  We are working on other training options for satellite campuses and should have further details soon.

Thanks to everyone who assisted and gave feedback regarding this important decision.

Hocking College Welcomes Back Alumni
More than 200 alumni, faculty, staff, students, and members of the community attended the First Annual Hocking College Homecoming on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

The event kicked-off with a breakfast catered by the Hocking College culinary students and faculty.  From there, alumni were escorted on guided campus tours.  Family Weekend events occurred throughout the day, including bounce houses, demonstrations from the Hocking Woods Nature Center, and other programming, such as games and magicians.
The Harvest Festival at Robbins Crossing offered Civil War reenactments, along with live music, traditional crafts, demonstrations and comfort foods like soup beans and cornbread.

Throughout the day, activities included fishing in the pond, a disc golf tournament and glassblowing demonstrations.  A beer garden and vendors were also located on campus.  The Homecoming concluded with a bonfire and live music.

Homecoming will continue to be an annual event held each October on Hocking College campus.

Fitness Management Program to Host Athletic Competitions

Hocking College Fitness Management program will host two athletic competitions, the First Annual Hocking College Triathlon and the Tenth Annual Weightlifting Competition.

The First Annual Hocking College Triathlon will take place on December 1 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held indoors at the Student Center and include a 10-minute swim, a 30-minute bike route and finish with a 20-minute run.

The triathlon entry fee is $10 for Hocking students and $20 for non-students, and event t-shirts will be included. Registration is required by October 31 to ensure a t-shirt and spot on the roster. The event is limited to the first 100 participants to register. Registrants should send estimated swim, bike and run times when registering for an assigned group.  The event is estimated to have an hour and a half completion time.

The triathlon will feature a staggered start with a new group starting every 15 minutes. The event staff request that contestants arrive 15-30 minutes prior to their event to warm up. Contestants should bring water, towel, swimsuit and change of clothes. Awards will be given in the follow categories, based on age: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-49, and 50+.

The Fitness Management program will also host the Tenth Annual Weightlifting Competition on Thursday, November 8 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center Multiplex. This competition is open to all Hocking College students and staff. Contestants are evaluated on the following three events: bench press, squat and dead lift. Scores are based on relative body weight (lifted weight divided by body-weight). Weigh-ins will take place from 4:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Pre-registration entry fee is $8, and $10 to register the day of the event. All participants will receive a free 2012 Weightlifting Competition t-shirt with registration. Prizes are given to the top three placers in both male and female categories. In addition, the highest individual lift for each event will receive an award.

For more information or to register for these events, contact Bill Finnearty by email at finneartyw@hocking.edu or by phone at 740.753.6533. Registration forms are also available at the Student Center front desk.

New Vending Services Offered on Campus
We are excited to announce Hocking College's partnership with a new vending company, 3D Vending sponsored by the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission.   We anticipate the new vending machines, supplied by 3D Vending, will provide us with increased selection and service.

We are also grateful for their donations to Hocking College, including $33,476 in new furniture for the vending areas across campus, and a PacMan video game and Air Hockey table for the Light Dining Hall.  If you have any questions or issues with the vending areas, contact Sonja Hill, Director of Retail Operations at ext. 7118.
Reminder: Glass Studio Open House
Interested in glass blowing? The new hot glass studio in the Visual Arts Center on Hocking College main campus (formerly Holl Lab) will host a public open house on October 18, 2012 from 5 - 8 p.m.

The open house will highlight the new hot glass studio and provide glass blowing demonstrations, presentations and tours throughout the evening.  Refreshments will also be provided.

Hocking College is the only two-year college in the state, and the only college in the region, with a hot glass studio. Glass is one of three specializations offered to Art, Design and Marketing program majors.

Thank You for Homecoming Assistance

Libby Villavicencio and Jessie McDonald send their thanks from the Hocking College Foundation office to all the volunteers who assisted in making the First Annual Hocking College Homecoming a success.  Foundation Board Members, and the founders of the Alumni Association, Diana Spurgus and Cathy Kerns, also expressed their gratitude to the volunteers.

"I talked to alumni who were enjoying themselves and they: were staying at a cabin in the area and saw it posted on a website; were riding their bikes along the bike path and their kids wanted to bounce in the bounce-houses; could not believe how large and beautiful the campus is from when they attended; hope to learn of more opportunities for continuing ed classes; and asked about evening classes for community interest topics," Kerns commented.

She concluded by stating, "THANK YOU to all who were involved!  You're the BEST!!!"

School of Nursing Completes Review

Hocking College School of Nursing recently completed their Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN) five-year visit.   The preliminary results of the visit found the program to be in full compliance. The program will receive their final full approval by the OBN in January. The surveyor was very complimentary of the program, faculty and facilities.

Congratulations and thank you to faculty, staff and administrators who assisted with the review process!
