Logan Campus to Host Free Energy Forum
Hocking College Logan Campus will host Jim Lemon, International Trade Regulatory Expert for United Technologies Corporation in Washington, D.C., to present a free forum on Monday, October 22 at 5 p.m. about the automobile that he has modified to run Electric caroff of various alternative fuels.

Lemon's concern about our nation's heavy reliance on oil as a transportation fuel sparked his interest in the modification of a vehicle that would allow the consumer to choose the energy the vehicle would consume. This also would provide consumers with the ability to choose from a variety of renewable and non-renewable fuel and energy sources based on price, availability, convenience, trip distance and/or environmental impact.

In early 2012, Lemon took a production vehicle, Toyota Prius Hybrid-electric, and adapted it to be able to run on electricity, methane gas (CNG), gasoline or gasohol. This unique vehicle gets 50+ miles per gallon and can travel 650 miles without stopping. The total cost of the vehicle and its modifications was approximately $20,000.

During the discussion forum, Lemon will debate the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to focus on what he believes is truly our country's most serious and enduring energy threat, in addition to presenting the modified vehicle that he independently developed as a way to address that threat. He will discuss its modifications, reasoning behind the changes, how the vehicle operates, environmental aspects, and compare it to other alternative fuel vehicles.

The free forum is open to the public at the Hocking College Logan Campus, located at 30140 Iles Road, Logan, Ohio 43138. Please contact Ava Mowery at 740.380.9315 to register to attend or for more information.

Hocking College Education Spurs International Career

Deborah (Shapiro) Hemstreet, a 1976 Hocking College graduate of the Nursing program, has spent most of her life in Israel, where she moved in 1982. She worked as a nurse for a year and then transitioned into a career in Medical Technical Writing, which has remained her passion.

Hemstreet said that she still remembers her time at Hocking Technical College very well. The skills that she learned through the nursing program have translated well into a medical writing career for Hemstreet on a global level.

She worked for 10 years at the Technioni-Israel Institute of Technology (Department of Biomedical Engineering) and then 10 years at Biosense Webster (Israel), a J&J Company.

Upon her return to the United States in 2007, Hemstreet created the company "Writing Solutions for the Tech-Challenged" and has created a substantial portfolio of work, many of which have received awards.

One of her projects, WebHelp, received two awards: Distinguished Technical Communication in a Society for Technical Communication (STC) chapter competition, which qualified the entry for the International Summit competition, and Excellence in Technical Communication.

Her portfolio of work includes developing help/translation software, writing scripts and manuals and assisting customers with complex forms/templates, graphics and presentations.

According to Hemstreet, without her nursing background, it would be very challenging to work, create or translate medical newsletters, manuals and other documents.

In August 2011, Hemstreet returned to Israel to work for Rambam Health Care Campus and currently assists them with their critical English communications as an Editorial Assistant for Rambam Maimonides Medical Journal and helps translate Hebrew and English content. She still maintains her personal business she launched in 2007 during her time in the United States.
