Hocking College Designated Military Friendly School
Hocking College was awarded the Military Friendly SchoolsŪ title from Victory Media Inc. for the third year in a row. The 2013 Military Friendly SchoolsŪ list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are embracing America's military service members and veterans as students.
Schools were considered that offer scholarships and discounts, veterans' clubs, full-time staff, military credit and other services to those who served. The list was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from schools across the country. Each year, schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year.
Specifically, Hocking College prioritizes the recruitment of students with military experience and is one of the top schools for providing the most academic credit for military and civilian credit. Scholarships and tuition discounts are also available to military students and veterans while all military students and dependents are offered in-state tuition without residency requirements. Hocking also allows military students called to active duty to return to school without any penalty.
The Military Friendly SchoolsŪ website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features the list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year's list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.

Hocking College President Dr. Ron Erickson was one of 37 Ohio public university and college presidents invited to attend a meeting with Ohio Governor John Kasich last week. Governor Kasich requested that the presidents create a plan for higher education funding that would concentrate on financial incentives for colleges based upon the graduation rates of their students. The governor discussed his vision for the higher education sector to work together to develop the State Share of Instruction proposal for the FY14-FY 15 state operating budget proposal to be unveiled by the executive branch in February.
The Governor's office distributed six higher education reform goals. Those include participation rates of Ohio high school graduates in higher education and encouraging them to continue their education in Ohio. In addition, Ohio hopes to attract out of state students to its institutions of higher education. The Governor also wants to see improved graduation rates, a shorter graduation time-span and more affordable higher education options. The Governor seeks to graduate students with the essential skills they need to achieve success in jobs and post-undergraduate education. Lastly, he wants to encourage graduates to stay in Ohio to pursue careers upon graduation.
The college presidents told the Governor that they would have their plan to him before Thanksgiving.

The forms will be collected and returned to the Board of Elections. Absentee voter applications will also be available at the table. |
Hocking College to Host Annual Shrimp Sale
The annual shrimp harvest and sale at the Hocking College Fish Hatchery at Lake Snowden, harvested by Hocking's Fish Management and Aquaculture students, will take place on Friday, September 28 beginning at 9 a.m. The fresh water shrimp will also be for sale the following day, Saturday, September 29 at the Athens Farmers Market located on East State Street.
The Seafood Institute has classified the Cultured Fresh Water Shrimp as a 'green' product. The shrimp look like regular sea shrimp but are milder in flavor. The mild flavor is also easier to season compared to sea shrimp. Fresh water shrimp are often preferred because people with allergies to sea shrimp are able to eat the fresh water variety. The public is invited to come on Friday morning and observe or take part in the harvesting. Shrimp will be sold at noon or after the pond is harvested. If interested in purchasing the shrimp, bring a cooler, and the ice will be supplied. The shrimp will die after they are put on the ice, allowing for the freshest product available.
The hatchery is located off State Route 50 West on County Road 80. Follow the "Shrimp" signs to the site. Please call 740.698.1925 for more information.

Alumni Spotlight
A Love of Nature Transformed into a Career
Adam Duff, Hocking College Wildlife Management graduate in 2000, is currently the Manager at The Florida Aquarium in Tampa where he previously worked as a biologist, thanks to the skills he learned while at Hocking College.
Duff grew up in southwest Ohio where he developed his love of the outdoors and conservation. "As a kid I was always drawn toward any activity that involved nature or being outside. Hiking, canoeing, whitewater rafting and photography are some activities that I still pursue as an adult," Duff said.
His love of the outdoors led him to Hocking College and then the University of Idaho where he studied Fish and Wildlife Management and Wildlife Biology respectively.
"After college I worked as a field technician for Idaho Fish and Game in the wilderness of central and southern Idaho," Duff said. "My drive for exploring new places and learning new ecosystems eventually brought me to Florida."
He says that the field skills he learned at Hocking have been an integral part of his career. "My background in field ID, ecology, and habitat management has enabled me to develop a number of conservation based initiatives that support The Florida Aquarium's mission of environmental stewardship," Duff commented.
Duff uses the knowledge and skills he learned at Hocking College on a daily basis at work and in his personal life. "I attribute my successful career to the strong foundation of field experience and theoretical knowledge gained by beginning my journey at Hocking College," Duff concluded.
