Public Safety Services Students Collaborate for Crisis Scenario
Approximately 150 Public Safety Services students from all four PSS programs: Police, Fire and EMS, and Social Services, Criminal Justice and Corrections, participated in a crisis scenario on Friday, May 11, 2012 as part of their capstone classes.

The students participated in a demonstration that consisted of a real two-story structure fire with mass casualties and a bomb threat in the Public Safety Building. The evacuation of the building created people with disruptive behavior, anxiety and fear who needed to be counseled with different needs.

In another part of the scenario, an auto accident created people trapped in a vehicle and extrication was performed.  Hocking College President Dr. Ron Erickson played the role of one of the trapped victims and was then flown by helicopter to the hospital. The State Highway Patrol and the State Fire Marshals' office provided the scenario with two bomb dogs that assisted with the evacuation and bomb search. After the scenario, both provided demonstrations for students on how the dogs are trained and work.

"The purpose of the scenario was to bring together all of the programs in a way that would help provide an understanding for what the others do and most importantly to begin to learn how to communicate effectively with each other under conditions that these student might see in the real world,"  Scott Mong, Fire Instructor, said.

To improve the validity of the assessment needs, working professionals, such as fire chiefs, people from the prison system, police and other Hocking alumni were asked to help assess the scenario from a technical aspect as well as a practical point of view.

"I thought the situations they presented to students and the role players they utilized presented a very realistic situation that any of these students could find themselves in," Corrina Dicken, Hocking Correctional Facility, said.

Bonnie Allen Smith, Coordinator, Assessment of Student Academic Achievement, was very involved in developing the forms and was also present to assure that important data could be collected to use to improve programs. This was also one of the goals of the scenario.

"This project was designed and developed for the students. It was an attempt to provide students with a capstone experience to better prepare them for successful, fulfilling careers. It is Hocking College's number one priority," Mong said.

Carl Stump, second year Police Science student, commented that the experience was positive. "I enjoyed teaming up with the other programs.  We were provided a hands-on opportunity to learn how we can all work together.  Luckily it was just a scenario!"

Hocking College: 100 Goal Blood Drive
The American Red Cross is holding the largest blood drive ever attempted in Hocking College or Nelsonville on Thursday, May 31, 2012. The Red Cross has enjoyed solid support from students in past blood drives at Hocking College, and now feel that they can find enough donors to make a goal of 100 units of blood collected during this one day.

The American Red Cross has seen blood donations steadily decline since mid-March, and once summer begins donations will drop even further. The support of the entire campus community is crucial not only to the success of the drive, but also, most importantly, to many patients in area hospitals who depend on blood donations for a variety of critical illnesses and injuries.

To promote this special blood drive, the Red Cross is offering more donor incentives than ever before. Twenty certificates for a free one-topping Domino's pizza will be raffled, along with certificates for free ice cream, gift cards, and other goodies for each donor. Finally, the Red Cross will hold a hot dog cookout outside the Multiplex, with food just for blood donors that day.

Each blood donation saves up to three lives in area hospitals, and donation takes very little time and is relatively painless. Please contact Elisa Timmerman, at et581908@ohio.edu with any questions, concerns, or to make an appointment. Full drive info is below.

Fire Students Provide Community Training, Attend Conference
FDIC 2012
From April 24 - 26, 54 Hocking College Fire Science students conducted Fire and Life Safety classes. The classes were conducted for 280 students from preschool through the second grade at Nelsonville York Elementary School, Presbyterian Pre-school, Nelsonville Headstart, and the Hocking College Early Learning Center.

Educating children to take appropriate action during an emergency is a critically important fire department function.  Teaching fire survival techniques such as stop, drop, and roll or crawl low under smoke can change behavior and thereby prevent loss of life due to fire. The students were also given fire safety coloring books and were able to see the fire truck up close.

The fire science students learn to deliver accurate, positive messages about fire and life safety, targeted to specific age groups. Students are required to write a report detailing what they learned while participating in this learning activity.  Some of the comments were, "As soon as we walked into the room they were very excited," "They loved the firefighter dressed in his gear; they thought it was very cool," "One thing I learned was that people, especially little kids, look up to us a lot.  They really listen to what you have to say, and they will remember!"

Also, the Fire & Emergency Services program sent 85 students to Indianapolis, Indiana on April 20 to attend FDIC, the world's largest firefighter training conference.

Students Perform Rescue in Logan House Fire

Two Fire students in the Fire Practicum Class, Hailey Burns and Derek Zaharenicz, were doing ride time with the Logan Fire Department when a working house fire was reported at 295 Orchard St. on May 6. Both students were instrumental in helping rescue the occupant of the structure, who sadly succumbed to his injuries 12 hours later.

Both of these students should be commended for the excellent job that they did while operating under difficult circumstances.

"I believe that these students were ready to accept the challenge that was put in front of them," Scott Mong, Fire Instructor, commented.

Visit the Logan Daily News for details of the fire and rescue.
