Q2S LogoHocking College Hosts Q2S Community Forum
Hocking College will host a Community Forum at 8 a.m. on April 30, 2012 at the Inn at Hocking College with representatives from local organizations and businesses, including banks, landlords and restaurants.  The Forum will discuss our upcoming quarters to semesters transition. 

The financial aid, admissions and student affairs offices will be on hand at the Community Forum to review the new academic calendar.  We will also provide an overview of the anticipated impact of semesters on our enrollment numbers, and the new schedule of financial aid overage checks.

The College is aware of the importance of the relationship between Hocking College and the community. We are holding the Forum to provide insight enabling local businesses and organizations to adjust expectations and operations accordingly.
Gallery Features Photography Invitational
The Opening Reception for the Photography Invitational will be Friday, April 27, 2012 from 5 - 9 p.m. at the Hocking College Art Gallery on 30 Public Square as part of Nelsonville's Historic Square Arts District Final Friday activities.

The exhibition features photography by three photographers, including Hocking College's own Lisa Sells of the Arts & Sciences Department, Patty Mitchell and Dennis Savage.  The exhibition will run through May 24, 2012.

Reorganization Continues 

Sonja Hill-Puckett has been named the Director of Retail and Dining Services.  In addition to her responsibilities of managing the dining halls, Sonja will now also direct the operations of the bookstore and provide the menu planning and nutritional aspects of the prepared meals provided to the Hocking College Early Learning Center.  In the future, she will also manage the vending functions on campus.

Melissa Conkel is the new Manager of Support Services.  Melissa will oversee the Mailroom, Print Shop and Warehouse operations.  She will also continue to direct switchboard operations, process withdraws and manage student placement assessment.

Both Sonja and Melissa will remain at their current office locations. Congratulations on your new positions!
Hocking Celebrates National Poem-In Your Pocket Day
Thursday, April 26 is National Poem-In-Your-Pocket Day.  To celebrate, the Arts and Sciences Department is hosting an open poetry reading in Oakley 209 from 10:30 a.m. -12 p.m.  The atmosphere is casual, as poetry lovers from across the campus come together to read and listen to their favorite poems.  Do you only have 10 or 15 minutes between classes?  No problem. Stop in, have a bite to eat, listen and/or share a poem.
U.S. Department of Education Hosting Webinar
On February 29, 2012, the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) hosted the first of a series of four webinars based on the findings from the White House Summit on Community Colleges, the Regional Summits that followed, and the Virtual Symposium on Community Colleges.

The third webinar of this series, Promoting College and Career Readiness:  Bridge Programs for Low-Skilled Youth and Adults, will be held on Thursday, April 26 from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m.   This webinar will feature key experts instrumental in building bridges to postsecondary career pathway systems (including a federal administration official, state administrator, and community college and community-based organization leaders) for individuals in need of improved literacy skills.

OUTLook Group Meetings and LGBT Support Group
Meetings for the LGBTA student group OUTLook (formerly Inclusion) are held every Thursday at 6 p.m. in Oakley 301. This is a student-run group that helps promote education and advocacy for people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or ally. All are welcome!

A LGBT support group sponsored by the Counseling Center is also held every Thursday in Oakley 301 from 5 - 6 p.m.. Contact Nancy Baur with questions.
Shyanna Gretz
Kappa Beta Delta Flower Sale
The Hocking College chapter of the Kappa Beta Delta International Honor Society will be holding their Annual Spring Flower Sale.  Part of the profit from the sale will be donated to an Athens County young girl, Shyanna Gretz, who is autistic and is raising money to purchase a Seeing Eye Dog.

See the attached order form for flower options, and payment must be included with the order.  Deadline for orders is Monday, April 30.  Submit form and money to Barbara Sunderlin in JL 349.  Flowers can be picked-up on Friday, May 4 between 12 - 3 p.m. at the warehouse.
The Women Gather: Spring Concert
Calliope Feminist Choir will be holding their 2012 Spring Concert, "The Women Gather" on May 19 at 7:30 and again on May 20 at 4:30 p.m at ARTS West in Athens.  Tickets can be purchased from Gail Hecky, Hocking Communications and Writing Instructor, who has been a member of the choir since its inception.  Tickets also may be purchased at Blue Eagle Music and Hyacinth Bean Florist in Athens.  For more information, visit the Calliope website, or contact Gail at ext. 7109; JL351A.

As a reminder, the Hocking College Board of Trustees will hold their monthly meeting April 24, 2012 at the Hocking College Perry Campus.

Archaeology Instructor Featured in Article
Annette Ericksen, Coordinating Instructor for the Archaeology program, was recently featured in an article about her other passion, Twin Maples Farm.  Ericksen's farm is located in Milton, West Virginia and focuses on the following:
  • Raising as much of her own food as possible.
  • Being responsible stewards to both the livestock and the natural environment.
  • Enjoying the hard work and reveling in the benefits of rural life.
  • Sharing the experiences with others.
