Student Center Declares Independence

In a stunning turn of events, Hocking College President, Dr. Ron Erickson, had his morning tea interrupted by a cry of, "The British are coming," from his assistant. The President was astounded when Prime Minister of Student Activities, Giles Lee, walked into his office and handed him a declaration of Student Center Independence on the grounds of, "education without representation." The President was speechless as he had his tea dumped in the Hocking River.

Students Pitch Ideas

Daniel Hill, Landscape Management student, proposes his vision for the Student Center patio to his class, instructors and Student Center staff. Daniel's ideas include a stage for live entertainment and a fire pit. We are also in search of name for this area that will reflect the cross-cultural themes of the Student Center. Any ideas?

BerryWild Berry Garden Update

A Wild Berry Garden is being created at Hocking Woods Nature Center in a space that was unused and has become overgrown with invasive species including Multiflora Rose and Japanese Honeysuckle.  The purpose for this Wild Berry Garden is to provide anyone the opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

During winter quarter, clearing of the area for the garden began.  Dave Sagan, manager of the Nature Center; Ron Mash, Director of Facilities;  Andrew Freeman, Landscape Management Program Coordinating Instructor; Badger Johnson, Community Food Initiatives; and multiple volunteers have been a part of creating the garden.  The Wild Berry Garden will be open to anyone at Hocking College, the entire community of Nelsonville, and all wildlife in the area.

The space will have benches to sit and enjoy the berries and will give anyone the opportunity to observe wildlife. A main path will also be located down the middle of the garden to the pond for ADA accessibility.

Today, the garden space is still being cleared and prepared for planting.  Also, a grant request for materials is in process.  For this project to keep moving forward, volunteers are needed.  Volunteers will gather each Monday night to continue clearing the site.  Tools are provided, along with a bonfire, food, and drinks.  We only need the hands to make this amazing Wild Berry Garden happen!.  If you like to indulge in wild berries in the summer, then come out and help create this garden right on Hocking's campus.

Grace Wyatt
Inspirational Student
Ecotourism student Grace Wyatt was taken by life flight to Grant Medical Center after a bicycle accident near Stroud's Run. After three days in a coma, Grace was able to respond to her mother by squeezing her hand. Grace is now able to talk and says she cannot wait to return to her studies, working at the Climbing Wall and really wants to go to Forfar Field Station in the Bahamas.

Everyone at Hocking College wishes Grace a speedy recovery. (Grace is also a graduate of Chardon High School, where the recent shooting tragedy occurred).

For ongoing updates about Grace's recovery, visit http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/gracewyatt
