Music Class Raises Donations Through "Ten Dollar Challenge"

The Hocking College Music Entrepreneurship class raised $677.75 for two local charities through the Great Ten Dollar Entrepreneurial Challenge, an exercise implemented by Music Management program coordinating instructor Neal Schmitt.

Each student in Neal's class received $10 to invest in their own micro-businesses. Students were not permitted to spend any money starting their business, other than the $10 provided by Schmitt. After their initial $10 investment, students could use the profits from the first venture to invest in another as many times as they wanted. At the end of the challenge, the initial $10 investment had to be returned.

The challenge took place over four weeks, and students were required to keep records of their activities. Some of their activities included selling food and supplies to other students, creating and selling compilation compact discs, renting items to other students and other fundraisers.

This year's class raised $677.75 from $220 in seed money. The class decided to donate half of the money to the Athens Animal Shelter. The student who raises the most money is the winner of the challenge, and decides the charity that will benefit from the other half of the money. This year's winner chose the Nelsonville High School Marching Band.

President of Foundation Board Recognized for Volunteer Work
Don Wood, president of the Hocking College Foundation board, was recognized as one of the Top 10 Athens County volunteers making an impact on the community for his involvement with ACEnet in the Athens News "2012 Annual Manual."

ACEnet operates three facilities to assist entrepreneurs: the Athens Business Incubation Center, the Food Manufacturing and Commercial Kitchen Facility and the Nelsonville Incubation.  The organization offers office and manufacturing space for below market rates.  ACEnet also makes available specialty equipment and services, as well as venture loans and e-commerce.

Wood is Board Chair of ACEnet, and Chief Chair of its sister loan organization, ACEnet Ventures.  Angie Hawk Maiden, CEO and president of both organizations, nominated him.  Maiden said Wood is always eager to help out and can lend practical knowledge and help others starting a business due to his experiences as owner of Don Wood Automotive.

According to the article, Wood said he was excited to be chosen for the list but was happier to have the chance to increase exposure for ACEnet.

Wild Berry Garden Volunteers Needed
As part of a class project, Natural and Historical Interpretation student Lindsey Kraft has began work on cultivating a community wild berry garden at the Hocking College Nature Center.

The path to the Nature Center is currently overgrown with vines and invasive plant species, such as multiflora rose.  Kraft, along with Nature Center director Dave Sagan, have planned three phases to clear the area, plant berries and provide a space for the community to relax and enjoy the garden.  Kraft and Sagan are currently evaluating the site and clearing some of the unwanted plants.

Kraft would like the college and entire campus community to become involved in the project.  The community will be free to visit the garden at anytime and pick berries, as long as the area is kept clean.  Kraft is now writing a proposal for the Community Garden Grant, in which she hopes to fund the project.

Kraft and Sagan are looking for volunteers to help them clear and plant the land.  If you would like to volunteer, please contact Lindsey Kraft at 856.383.9242 or Dave Sagan at 740.753.6326.
ODOT Recruiting Volunteers for State Roadway Cleanup
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is recruiting volunteers for its State Roadway Cleanup in southeast Ohio Saturday, April 14, 2012 as a part of Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup.

The Athens County location for the cleanup is the Wayne National Forest Headquarters and Welcome Center located off of U.S. Route 33 between The Plains and Nelsonville.  Volunteers should arrive by 8:30 a.m.  At 9 a.m., a short kick-off ceremony will be held, after which volunteers will be shuttled to area roadways.  The cleanup is expected to end by noon.

On average, ODOT spends $4 million each year picking up nearly 400,000 bags of trash from highways and interchanges. The cost and time involved for crews to remove litter, however, could be used for much-needed equipment or highway repairs.

Event organizers are inviting area groups, businesses and organizations to join in this event by pre-registering online.

Hocking Alum Travels on Mission Trip to Nicaragua
Tiffany McCombs, 2006 Hocking College graduate from the surgical / operating room technology program and daughter of Jan Six who works in the information technology department at Hocking, recently returned from a mission trip to Nicaragua where she assisted in over 150 eye procedures.

After trying her hand at other businesses, Tiffany decided to enroll in a medical program at Hocking College so she could help people.  She was hired by the Columbus Eye Surgery Center, within a week of finishing her clinicals at Marietta Memorial Hospital, where she has worked for the last six years.

Tiffany recently had the opportunity to assist a team of eye surgeons in running a clinic on an all-expense paid six-day trip to Nicaragua.  After one day of set-up, the team worked from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the next three days, working on 151 cataracts and glaucoma cases, performing three operations and providing post-operation care.

After the clinic was finished, the group spent a day relaxing at a resort on the Pacific Ocean, but Tiffany said that was not the best part.  "The prayers and thanks from the patients was the best part to me.  I am very fortunate to have gotten that opportunity and look forward to another trip next year," Tiffany said.

Kudos to Tiffany for her important work in giving back to the global community, and for her excellent international representation of our Hocking College students!
