New Payroll Deduction Options for Scholarships
Faculty and staff may now have the option of donating to the Susan K. Ipacs Scholarship and Goal: Graduation! Scholarship through payroll deductions.
The Susan K. Ipacs Nursing Legacy Scholarship Fund was established at the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio to honor the work and life of Susan Ipacs, former Associate Dean of the Hocking College School of Nursing. As so many depended on Sue for her compassion and dedication to the profession, it is the hope that students pursuing their nursing degree remember the reason behind their studies, and the importance of compassion for people each day, as a result of the scholarship. The scholarship awards a qualified second year Hocking College nursing student financial aid.
Goal: Graduation! Scholarships are designed to assist students in continuing with their studies without interruption, as students sometimes find financing college more difficult as they progress through their program. The minimum eligibility requirements are as follows: student must have at least a 2.75 grade point average, 45 semester hours toward degree completion, exhausted all sources of eligible financial aid (including federal aid), a letter of recommendation from a Hocking College faculty member, and a brief personal statement addressing career goals upon degree completion and difficulties encountered. The appropriate aid-year Federal Application for Financial Aid must also be filed.
Hocking College employees can make donations to these scholarships through payroll deductions. A minimum of 12 participants with a donation total exceeding $100 is needed to establish and maintain payroll deduction. For more information, or to request payroll deduction, please complete the donation form and return it to Ted Swallow at 740.753.6559.

Important Budget Information and BAC Update
Gina Fetty, Hocking College's Vice President of Financial Services, announced the official closing of the 2011 fiscal year and changes in budget policies.
The state auditor's office recently accepted the audit report for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011, meaning the fiscal year is officially closed and carry-forward funds are now available. The Fiscal Office will now provide the carry-forward report and the document that needs to be completed to inform the fiscal office of intended use of carry-forward funds. Gina must approve the timing of funds being released, but she is no longer required to approve requisitions of $1,000 or more. Budget Planning Unit Heads will still need to approve requisitions for their planning units in excess of $2,000, but the fiscal office is also looking into changes in that arena.
Within the next week, the fiscal office will enable system controls to aid in ensuring that budgets are not overspent. The system will not allow transactions to go through without adequate budgets in place in the line items being charged. Payroll rosters are now available to departments on a monthly basis to assist with controlling payroll costs within their areas. The payroll rosters will be posted to the website.
A number of departments will be contacted in the near future to participate in budget hearings before the Budget Advisory Council (BAC). The BAC has determined the breakdown of the planning units into sessions of presentations. All areas utilizing unrestricted funds of the College will have an opportunity to showcase their unit in a very concise presentation and request additional funding for specific needs in the next fiscal period.
The fiscal office is planning formal training sessions on different aspects of managing a departmental budget, but individual training sessions are also available. For more information or to schedule a training, please contact Gina Fetty at 740.753.6445.

Students in the Hocking College Archaeology program and program coordinator Annette Ericksen have been invited back to a second dig around the foundation of Thornhill Mansion in Volcano, West Virginia July 23 to August 3, 2012.
The dig, which is the second archaeological dig at the site, is hosted by non-profit volunteer organization Friends of Mountwood Park.
