Guidelines for Adverse Weather
Although we have been fortunate this year to experience unseasonably warm weather, the anticipation of inclement weather is upon us.  Please review the following for guidelines concerning campus closure. Individual employees must make their own decision regarding their safety in traveling to work.

Closing Campus
Hocking College will be open for classes except in cases of extreme danger (such as ice), emergency, or mandated closing by public officials (such as when the water supply is unavailable.) There will be a number of times when the public schools might close while the campus remains open.

As weather conditions may be different for each of our campuses, individual locations of Hocking College may close.  Also, the campus may cancel only morning classes and reopen for afternoon and evening classes.

Human Resources
During bad weather, employees can call the Human Resources Call-Off Line at 740.753.7096.  This number will provide daily information to employees in regard to emergency closures for all campus locations and still allow you to leave a voicemail reporting your absence or tardiness if the College is open.

Listed below are the identified Level One Emergency Personnel.  Each designated Level One Personnel is responsible for notifying other employees when their services are required during an emergency. Any bargaining unit employees required to work will be compensated in accordance with their specific bargaining unit agreement.

Level One Emergency Personnel
For the information of the Hocking College community, Level One Emergency Personnel are identified in the Emergency Management Guide as the following positions:
  • President
  • Vice President of Administrative Services
  • Vice President of Fiscal Services
  • Chief Technology Officer
  • Director of Campus Safety
  • Associate Provost
  • Dean of Student Affairs
  • Director of Residence Life
  • Director of Facilities
  • Director of Food Services
  • Director of Marketing & Public Relations
  • Director of Human Resources
  • Maintenance Supervisor
  • Housekeeping Supervisor
  • Custodial Supervisor
Those employees who are designated Level One Emergency Personnel are required to be on campus in the event of emergencies and/or cancellations.

Communication of Closure
Any change of schedule or cancellation of classes will be posted on our website and our Facebook page and announced on the following radio or television stations. The stations will be notified by at least 7 a.m.  Anyone who has enrolled in Nixle will also receive notification regarding the closure.  Do not call the college switchboard.

Student Support Services is now accepting referrals to its TRiO program, The Learning Connection (TLC).  The program is designed to assist and encourage first-generation and low-income students, as well as those with disabilities, to develop the skills and motivation necessary to successfully complete a college education.

TLC's goal is to increase the retention, graduation and transfer rates of participants and to foster an institutional climate that is supportive of success.   The program offers the following services: advising and scheduling assistance; professional tutoring; laptop loan program; two study labs with internet access and free printing and copying; transfer advising and college visits; peer mentoring and tutoring; academic workshops; social and cultural events; and supplemental grant money.

The program is funded by an annual grant from the federal government to serve 190 students on a campus where over 60 percent of students are either a first-generation student, a low-income student or both.  If you have students in your classes or know students who could use a little help and guidance, please send them to John Light Hall 249 or 253 to get more information and complete an application.

For additional information, visit the TLC webpage, or take a look at the winter quarter 2012 TLC newsletter for ongoing information about the program.
JOMc, Foundation and Elberfeld Scholarship Applications Available
Applications for JOMc and Hocking College Foundation Scholarships, along with the Martha and Earl Elberfeld Scholarship, are now available online.

JOMc Scholarships are awarded annually to 15 first and second year students who are likely to be successful in their careers using their technical education.  Foundation Scholarships are awarded to students in each program and are not based on financial need.  Applications must be submitted by February 28, and selections will be made April 30.

The Martha and Earl Elberfeld Scholarship is available to Logan-Hocking High School students majoring in Forest Management or Business Entrepreneurship.  Students must also have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Applications must be submitted by March 31, and selections will be made April 30.

Applications should be mailed or faxed to the Scholarship Committee at the Office of Financial Aid.
Hocking Hosts College Goal Sunday

Hocking College will host the Athens County site for a statewide college financial aid event, "College Goal Sunday" on February 12, 2012 at 2 p.m.

The free event, presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents, assists students and parents with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA.) FAFSA is the federal application required to receive financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans, as well as need-based state grants.

Due to the great demand expected for assistance in completing the FASFA, families are encouraged to register online for the free event or by calling 800.233.6734.

Students should bring their Social Security card, driver's license, IRS 1040 tax return and W2s, their parents' IRS 1040 tax return and W2s, and any other benefit and/or income information to the event. Attendees will register at the John Light Hall Main Concourse on Hocking Campus.  No alternate date for the event has been scheduled in the case of inclement weather.

FAFSA is the key to funding a college education and helping families to overcome financial barriers that otherwise prevent students from attending college.  Studies show that a student is 50 percent more likely to attend college when they complete the FAFSA.
Culinary & Hospitality Students Offer Lunch Options
Looking for something different and inexpensive for lunch?  As part of the student learning laboratory, the talented Culinary and Hospitality students will prepare and serve a delicious lunch to the campus community every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout the quarter, from 12 - 2 p.m at the Starbrick Bistro in the Inn at Hocking College.  A full meal, including beverage will be served for the low price of $6.  Selections of desserts will also be available for $2 each.  Cash only will be accepted, and no substitutions please.  Watch for lunch menus in your inbox!
Student Center Hosts Cross-Cultural Day
Visit the Student Center Hall of Nations February 2, 2012 from 3-5 p.m. to learn about different cultures around the world during the second annual Cross-Cultural Day, part of the One Hocking initiative.

Taste sensations from around the world, music from the Middle East and Europe, dancing and some reflections on cross-cultural issues will be featured. Meet our international students and celebrate our diverse culture in a colorful atmosphere of fine food and music.
DAAP
The DAAP Team won the 2011 Innovation of the Year Award for Hocking College.
Innovation of the Year Award
Every year, the League for Innovation in the Community College honors outstanding innovations that have been recognized by member institutions as "Innovations of the Year." These innovations represent capstone achievements, and the continuing renewal of the spirit of innovation and experimentation upon which the League was founded.

The Innovation of the Year Award is designed to recognize college staff members who have designed and implemented a significant innovation.  One winner from each member college will be accepted and each individual college chooses its winning innovation.  All areas of Hocking College: instructors (including part-time), administrators, professional and support personnel are encouraged to submit applications as individuals or in groups.

Applicants must submit a brief (1000 characters or less) description of the innovation including how it meets at least three of the following criteria: quality, efficiency, cost effectiveness, replication, creativity and timeliness.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday, February 20, to the Hocking College Innovation of the Year Committee c/o Laura Kreider, Oakley 210.  For more information, contact Laura Kreider at 740.753.7038.
Last year's winning innovation came from the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Program (DAAP) Team.  For more information about previous winners, please visit the League for Innovation website.
