Q2S LogoQuarters to Semesters Update
The Quarters to Semesters transition team is in the final days of new course and curriculum data entry into Datatel.  They will be shifting gears quickly, at the beginning of winter quarter, to building advising tools for Hocking faculty and staff.  Contact Joe Wakeman at 740.753.6098 with any questions regarding the transition.

The following Q2S E-mail Update was sent to students and parents last week to inform them of important items related to the transition:

In August 2012, Hocking College's academic calendar will switch from quarters to semesters. We realize that the transition to semesters raises questions for our students and parents. I want to assure you that Hocking College is committed to forming a mutually beneficial partnership with students to facilitate a smooth transition.

Each Hocking student making the transition can expect that advising resources will be available to assist him or her in defining a specific path to degree completion. This path will be determined by working with an appropriate advisor to use a new WebAdvisor tool, a Student Educational Plan (SEP). The switch to semesters should not impede a student's progress toward his or her graduation date. As always, the student must maintain his or her course-load, meet grade requirements, meet agreed goals set upon with the SEP and satisfy graduation requirements.

Tuition and fee payment schedules will be aligned with the semester calendar. Although this does not indicate a raise in tuition, students will only be paying tuition twice a year instead of three, which may make it seem higher. However, the college may implement annual tuition increases as deemed necessary and authorized by the Board of Trustees.

If you have any questions about the transition, please visit the Hocking College Q2S webpage or contact the student's academic advisor to review their individual situation for autumn 2012.

Is Your New Year's Resolution to Lose Weight?
Hocking College is exploring the possibility of starting a Weight Watchers at Work program.  The sessions will be held over the lunch hour, on-site at the college. Also, our health insurance carrier Medical Mutual offers a program so that some of the Weight Watchers fees, up to $150 per year, may be reimbursable.  Interested?  We need 15 people to bring Weight Watchers at Work to campus. Contact Loretta Whaley at 740.753.7041 in Human Resources at as soon as possible to advise her of your interest, so that we may start the group after the new year.
Holiday Closing Information
During Winter Break, all Concourse services in John Light Hall will be open from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., except the Cashier and Records office, which will be open from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.  Hocking College will be closed December 26 and January 2 in observance of Christmas and the New Year.  Verbatim will take next week off, but will return in the new year.  Have a happy holiday!

Kappa Beta Delta Members Spread Holiday Cheer

Members of Kappa Beta Delta, a business honor society at Hocking College, spread the holiday spirit this season.

The members participated in various fundraising events, such as selling poinsettias, a raffle and bake sale.  These events earned funds for the Kappa Beta Delta members to perform three service projects.

Members provided residents at Kimberly Meadows in Nelsonville, a senior apartment complex, with a luncheon and decorated their Christmas tree.  Additionally, members once again donated money to the Hocking County Rotary Club bicycle project.

Finally, the last donation was to the Wesleyan Church in Nelsonville for their Outreach Program and kitchen.  The church donates boxes of food and gifts to help families in need for their holidays.  In addition to this Outreach Program, Kappa Beta Delta decided to help the church fund to replenish utensils needed for their kitchen that was destroyed by a fire in April.

Thank you to Kappa Beta Delta Members and adviser Barbara Sunderlin for giving back to the local community this holiday season!
