Hocking College Forest Management student Sharayah Shepler was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from The Davey Tree Expert Company Monday, November 21, 2011.

Sharayah volunteered for the Ohio Forestry Association 2011 Ohio Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Camp and for the Ohio Tree Farm Annual Field Day. She is a tutor in the Forest Dendrology Class at Hocking College and was also on Dean's List Winter Quarter 2011.

"With my degree I plan to join the Peace Corps for a few years then follow my forestry career or vice versa," Sharayah said "I would also like to go back to school for my bachelor's in Forestry."

The Davey Foundation Arbor Grant awarded 40 $1,000 scholarships after receiving more than 100 applications. Students throughout North America, including Canada, from 34 colleges and universities applied for the scholarship.

"As the applications came in, we started seeing not only the number of applicants increase, but also the quality of the students applying for the scholarships noticeably on the rise," R.J. Laverne, Manager of Education and Training, said. "We are looking for students that match our mission as a company," he said.

Davey Tree was established in 1880, and offers tree care, vegetation management and utility consulting service, and grounds management or large tree removal. For more information about The Davey Tree Expert Company visit www.davey.com.

Culinary Alumni Start Catering Business

Kyle and Rachel Stierwalt, Hocking College Culinary and Baking program grads, launched their own catering business in June 2011.  The Stierwalts opened Daley Catering LLC and operate their business out of the Fremont Federation of Women's building on Court Street in their hometown of Fremont.

Kyle said the business is 99 percent devoted to in-house catering at the Court Street building, with Daley Catering hosting wedding receptions, graduation parties, bridal showers, civic group meetings and other gatherings.  Kyle concentrates primarily on the entrees, while Rachel usually makes the desserts.

"It has become a family affair in terms of running the business," Rachel said. Parents and family members from both sides take turns with dishes, waiting on customers and helping in the kitchen.

Best of luck to Hocking grads Kyle and Rachel!
