Hocking College Hosts "We Are STEM"
Hocking College will host "We Are STEM" (science, technology, engineering and math) on Friday, November 18, 2011. "We Are STEM" is a one-day program offered to ninth-grade girls from area high schools designed to promote STEM careers.
Hocking College, one of the original participating schools, is in its fifth year of offering the program. "We Are STEM" is funded by a grant from the Ohio Department of Education. Each November on a given date, participating colleges throughout Ohio take part in this popular event. Faculty, staff and community volunteers work together to impact and influence the students in a positive manner and setting. Students also have the opportunity to meet and interact with female mentors from area businesses and engage in hands-on activities with faculty and staff.
All participants will receive backpacks, t-shirts, flash drives and other prizes. Registration and refreshments will be available from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m. in the Student Center with an introduction and welcome by Sue Chiki, Associate Provost, and Dr. Ron Erickson, President. The remainder of the day will consist of STEM activities with an hour break for lunch. The event will conclude at 1:30 p.m. in the student center. If you would like more information about the event, contact Linda Howard at 740.753.6557.

Alum Named New Brown County Wildlife Officer
Hocking College Alumnus Eric Lamb recently took over the duties of the Brown County Wildlife Office. A native of Wilmington, he worked for Fayette County Soil and Water District after graduating from Hocking. Eric has also previously worked as a wildlife officer for Hamilton County.
Eric says that although the two counties are under the same district, there is a significant difference between them.
"Brown County definitely has more complaints of hunting without permission and trespassing," he said. "That's been a lot more active. There are a lot more complaints of spotlighting at night than in Hamilton County. Hamilton County is one of our busiest fishing enforcing counties. In Brown, its definitely a big hunting county, so there's been a little switch in gears here."
Eric said working in a new county is always a lot of work. Making new relationships and finding out how each law enforcement agency likes to do business is essential to the operations of the wildlife officer.
Eric is just another example of the successful and wonderful graduates Hocking College produces. Congrats to Eric on his new job!

 Adverse Weather Guidelines
As we enter the time period for inclement weather, please review the following information about campus closure.
Hocking College will be open for classes except in cases of extreme danger (such as ice), emergency, or mandated closing by public officials (such as when the water supply is unavailable.) There will be a number of times when the public schools might close while the campus remains open.
Also, the campus may cancel only morning classes and reopen for afternoon and evening classes. We may reopen for evening classes because many students and staff miss hearing cancellation announcements due to the wide range of commuters and various radio stations, and some of these stations may not announce closings frequently. Also, scattered student and staff schedules, with various beginning times such as 10 a.m., 11 a.m., or even later, mean that some people snowed in at 8 a.m. could easily make it by 10 a.m. or 12 p.m. We may not close school at 8 a.m., as many people arrive later when roads are often clear. Be safe.
Any change of schedule or cancellation of classes will be posted on our website (hocking.edu) and our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HockingCollege.Ohio) and announced on these radio or television stations. The stations will be notified by at least 7 a.m. Do not call the college switchboard.

Thank You for Assistance with HLC Visit
Molly Weiland sends out a campus-wide thank you to all who helped prepare the campus for our HLC visit, set up our resource room, collected documents, responded to last minute calls for help, brought thoughtfulness and a critical eye to our self study, provided editing help and provided wonderful meals, coffee, snacks and services for our visitors.
The list could go on forever, and maybe should, but the greatest thanks goes to all of you who serve our students well in whatever role you play at the college. Our visitors heard this from our students and had the opportunity to witness your commitment to putting students at the center of what you do.
