Celebrate Learning on Assessment Day
November 1, 2011 marks our 16th year of reporting assessment data.  Assessment is all about the learning! We are held accountable for learning by our students, their families, our colleagues, legislators, the Ohio Board of Regents and the Higher Learning Commission. Assessment of student learning should guide us in our efforts to improve curriculum and instruction.

Molly Weiland and Bonnie Allen Smith will be visiting each of our schools on Employee Learning Day tomorrow to talk with faculty about the assessment of student academic achievement and the upcoming Higher Learning Commission visit.
Annual Benefits Fair Tomorrow
Faculty and staff are invited to attend the Human Resources Annual Benefits Fair, scheduled for Tuesday, November 1, 2011. The fair will be held between 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. in the John Light Dining Hall. Information will be available about insurance, wellness and retirement. Please plan to attend. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of your Human Resources representatives:
Caucus Meeting to be Held Thursday

A caucus of school board presidents in Athens, Hocking and Perry counties will be convened Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Inn at Hocking College for the purpose of filling two vacancies on the Hocking College Board of Trustees.

The Hocking College Board of Trustees has nine members, three of whom are appointed by the Governor of the State of Ohio and six appointed by a caucus, each for a term of three years. Appointees must be qualified electors residing within our district (Athens, Hocking and Perry) and cannot be employees of the College.

Honoring Our Online Military Hocking Students
As Veterans Day approaches, it is important to take time and recognize Hocking students who continue their education while fighting for our country.

Hocking College began the Online Military Education Program in 2009 with the support of President Erickson. Since then, we've had over 40 graduates and now have over 200 students participating. Members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard as well as the Army National Guard and Reservists from many states also make up our student population. Although you may not see them everyday in your classrooms, they still make an impact on Hocking College and our world.

An example of this is Staff Sergeant Christopher Free, from Okolona, Mississippi, who is a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard. He is currently assigned to the Human Resource Non Commissioned Officer in Charge, 1-185th Attack Helicopter Battalion, Al Asad, Iraq.

Christopher enrolled in Hocking College in May 2011 as a transfer student from American Military University to receive an Associate of Technical Studies degree in Human Resources in Military Science. He needed the degree to meet the Army educational requirements for Warrant Officer Candidate School so he can be promoted to Military Personnel Officer, Warrant Officer 1. Christopher will have graduated by the end of October, after only five months.  He was referred to us by another soldier student in his unit, and he in turn has referred one of his subordinates, Specialist Kim Boyd, another full-time Human Resources Specialist and part-time helicopter tail-gunner as a student.  She is also making fantastic progress.

Another student is Andrew Monnin, a soldier in the Wyoming Army National Guard stationed in eastern Afghanistan assigned to a Medevac company, working as a Combat Flight Paramedic. Andrew first came to Hocking College in 1997 and has returned this year for the Military Emergency Medical Services degree program. He joined the National Guard in 2008 as a Combat Medic. After deployment, Andrew would like to work full-time as a career firefighter/paramedic. He is looking into highly competitive positions, and hopes his future degree from Hocking will allow him to compile all his civilian and military education into an associate's degree.

These Hocking students work everyday to better themselves for their country and for their families. Remember them as you remember all who have served this Veterans Day on November 11.

Salvation Army Stocking Stuffers
For many years, Hocking College faculty, staff and students have filled an average of 60 stockings for the Salvation Army Stocking Stuffers program. Many children only receive stockings because of this program.

New this year, you can now decide on the specific gender and age, and purchase small gifts for that child, as opposed to buying for a boy or girl in a certain age-range. Stockings are needed for children, infant to 18 years old. There is usually a shortage of stockings for the 12-17 year age group.

Please do not include candy and other perishable items or gift cards in the stockings. You will receive one topper to staple the stocking closed and on which to write "girl" or "boy" and the age of the intended recipient.   Filled stockings are due by December 9, 2011 to the Community Outreach Center in John Light 249K.

If you or an organization would like to fill a stocking, please email Suzanne Brooks-Korner with information about how many stockings you wish to fill and where you are located. Suzanne will send the stockings through interoffice mail, or you may pick them up from her office Monday - Friday between 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.  If you have any further questions, contact Suzanne at 740.753.7111.
Rodeo Team Seeking Sponsorship
A Hocking College student is looking for assistance as she tries to garner support for a Rodeo Team at Hocking. Taryn Yarnell, a first year student, would like to have Hocking sponsor a Rodeo Team so she and other interested students could represent the school in the Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

Up to four students are allowed to compete from a non-member school without the cost of a membership fee, but riders need the school's permission to compete as individuals within the organization. If more than four riders from Hocking are interested in competing, Hocking must become a member school.

The rodeos in the division take place everywhere from Ohio to Missouri. Taryn is looking for sponsorship to help support the cost of gas and lodging.

If anyone has any information that may help Taryn or if you would like to assist in sponsoring the team, please contact her at [email protected].
United Appeal
United Appeal Annual Campaign

Do you have an interest in helping out the Athens community? The United Appeal for Athens County (UAAC) is looking for donations to reach their goal of $180,000.

Donations can be made either by check or a payroll deduction, and a pledge form will be sent to you through interoffice mail. The donation is tax deductible, and a receipt is available upon request.

Children and families in Athens are better able to meet their basic needs because of gifts made to UAAC. Last year over $170,000 was donated to help a wide variety of people.

Your gift to UAAP could help your neighbors Give Help and Get Help through direct action with local agencies working to eliminate substandard housing, provide nutritious food and high quality health care.

For more information, explore the online database at www.211athenscounty.org or contact Suzanne Brooks-Korner, Community Outreach Coordinator, at 740.753.7111.

Coon Recognized as 2011 Natural Resources Conservation Educator of the Year

Larry Coon, Hocking College instructor and Dean of the College of Natural Resources, was awarded the 2011 Natural Resources Conservation Educator of the Year Award on October 20, 2011. The Athens Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) presented the award at their 65th Annual Meeting and Banquet.

"Born and raised here, he has been a life-long champion for natural resources conservation and education. You can hardly be involved in natural resources locally and not at least know his name," Teresa Caldwell, Conservation Educator of the Athens SWCD, said about Larry.

Larry first joined Hocking College in 1975 as an instructor in Environmental Health and taught for seven years. After a leave of absence from the school, he returned in 1988 to teach. Larry earned a master's degree in Higher Education and continued to teach for 25 years. He has also served as the Dean of the School of Natural Resources for the last six years.

Besides instructing, Larry has overseen the development of trails, classes and the infrastructure of the school, both on the Main Campus and at Lake Snowden. In 2008, he was successful in the push to reopen Lake Snowden. He developed a budget and made it a part of the experience for Hocking students, as well as local youth through partnerships with Athens SWCD and Ohio Future Farmers of America. Under his guidance, the natural resources program has grown and Lake Snowden has been rejuvenated.

Congratulations Larry for your well deserved recognition!
