Fall quarter studentWelcome Fall Quarter!
by Dr. Molly Weiland, Provost/Vice President Academic and Student Affairs

What a wonderful sight to see all of our new students today!  Thanks for being present to welcome them and for taking time to talk about your programs.  They each come to us with a different picture of the world and of what to expect of college, different challenges and gifts.   In a time with steep competition for enrollment among colleges, it is so often the fine reputation you have helped us to earn that brings them to our door.

This year, approximately 51% of our students are in the 17-21 age range.  "The Mindset List" from Beloit College tells us (among other things) for our students entering directly from high school that  "there has always been an Internet ramp onto the information highway"; "their schools' 'blackboards' have always been getting smarter"; "they never 'rolled down' a car window"; "they have grown up with bottled water"; "they're always texting 1 n other"; "they've always been able to dismiss boring old ideas with 'Been there, done that, gotten the T-shirt'"; and "thanks to MySpace and Facebook, autobiography can happen in real time".  (The full list is fun if you have time to go to Beloit's website.)

Still, whether your students are fresh from high school or are entering Hocking College at a later time in their lives, you'll do what you do best and connect with our students and help bring them to the success that they seek from our college.  Let us know what we can do to help you find the support that your students needs.   Provide good challenges and help them to grow.  Thanks for all that you do on behalf of our students.

Veterans' Memorial Dedication

Thanks for Assistance
with Veterans' Memorial and Dedication

When Hocking graduate Kelly Harnett reached out to Dean of Natural Resources, Larry Coon and faculty member Cheryl Mollohan about creating a memorial on campus, the idea for the SSG Curtis "Moose" Oakes Veterans' Memorial Garden was born.  Between that fall day and the September 24 garden dedication, many hours of hard work were contributed to memorialize this Hocking alumni and fallen hero.

Thank you to the following people who made this garden and dedication possible:

* Cheryl for working with Kelly to conceptualize the idea of the garden, raising funds, creating plaques and all other forms of support.

*Gina Fetty who assisted in facilitating the Hocking College Foundation's gifts and coordinated the accounting for the fund.

*Andy Freeman, along with his crew of students and staff, who spent many hours in all weather conditions designing, digging, hauling and planting the beautiful memorial garden.  It will be an ongoing tribute to all fallen soldiers for years to come.

*Chaz Neill, student worker who initiated the planning for the dedication event.

*Ron Mash and the grounds crew for making the campus especially beautiful for the dedication.

*Nate Perez, Giles Lee, Sally Lozada, Mike Belcher, Rob Queen and Tim Davis for their help with coordinating all the details related to the dedication event.

*Roger Buck for assistance with finalizing the dedication, and his terrific work as the emcee.

*Hocking Student Jason Scott Hook for adding his amazing voice to the dedication.

*Bev Matheny and Adeana Meadows for administrative support.

Thank you also to all of the faculty, staff, administration and campus community who contributed financially to make this a reality, and to those of you who attended the ceremony Saturday to pay tribute to this soldier who fought and gave his life for our country.

The spirit of the Hocking College community shines through!
