Larry is also involved with the fire department in New Lexington, active in his church and a sponsor of little league sports. Larry is a firm believer in giving back and teaches it in his classes and throughout his daily life.
New Water Fountain/Filter Stations
Check out our four new water fountain/filter stations in the Student Center, near JL 195, first floor of the Natural Resources Building and the first floor of Public Safety Services. These new stations are a pilot effort to reduce our use of disposable plastic water bottles. Simply put your reusable water bottle near the sensor, and it will fill up, very quickly too, with cold filtered water.

Please encourage everyone in the campus community to use the stations. We will kick off our effort to become better at water conservation and use less disposable plastic bottles on Monday, September 26 during both orientation sessions by providing all new students with free reusable water bottles.
Computer Science Students to Teach Senior Citizens
Second-year Hocking College computer science students will share their skills and knowledge with senior citizens who enroll in a service-learning course in basic computer skills specifically targeted to their needs. The 10-week class begins October 3 from 3 - 5 p.m. in Shaw Lab on the Hocking College Campus.

Instructor Mark Yanko said there is no charge, but space is limited to 20 students, and he invites first-time participants to take part.

"This is a great opportunity for senior citizens to learn basic computer skills, Internet usage, e-mail and web page design through one-on-one instruction as seniors are paired with Hocking College students," Yanko said.

For more information or to register, contact Yanko at 740.753.6507. Space will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Annual Fall Fresh Water Shrimp Sale
The annual shrimp sale at the Hocking College Fish Hatchery at Lake Snowden, harvested by Hocking's Fish Management and Aquaculture students, will take place on Friday, September 23, 2011. The fresh water shrimp will also be for sale the following day at the Athens Farmers Market, located on East State Street.

The Seafood Institute has classified the Cultured Fresh Water Shrimp as a 'green' product.

The shrimp are similar to sea shrimp but are milder in flavor, which allows for easier seasoning. People with allergies to sea shrimp often prefer freshwater, because they can consume that variety without a reaction.

Faculty and staff are invited to come on Friday morning and observe or take part in the harvesting. Shrimp will be sold at noon or after the pond is harvested. If interested in purchasing the shrimp, bring a cooler, and the ice will be supplied. The shrimp will die after they are put on the ice, allowing for the freshest product available. The price will range from $7.50 - $10.00 per pound, depending on the quantity purchased.
The hatchery is located off State Route 50 West on County Road 80. Follow the "Shrimp" signs to the site.
Environmental Documentary Screened Locally
Aldo Leopold Conservationists and those interested in environmental issues should take note - Stuart's Opera House and Wayne National Forest will host a free screening of a new documentary on Friday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m. The movie is the first full-length, high definition documentary ever made about conservationist Aldo Leopold.

The film, Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for our Time, is a production of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, the US Forest Service and the Center for Humans and Nature.

Traveling from Chicago to New Mexico, the movie portrays Leopold's vision of a community that cares about both people and land.
Leopold is best known for his classic A Sand County Almanac and his work as an educator, philosopher, forester, wilderness advocate and ecologist.
