Veterans' Memorial Garden to Honor Fallen Soldier
The dedication of the new Veterans' Memorial Garden in front of John Light Hall will be held on September 24, 2011 at 5 p.m. Staff Sgt. Curtis A. Oakes will be the first veteran to be memorialized with a tree planting and plaque presentation at the ceremony.
Staff Sgt. Curtis A. Oakes, who was affectionately called "Moose," died while serving his country in Afghanistan. He was a Hocking graduate from the Natural Resources program.
Through both individual donations, and support from the Hocking College Foundation, a Hocking College arboretum is being established, with the first section to be dedicated at the ceremony as the Veterans' Memorial Garden. The tree honoring Staff Sgt. Oakes will be an "anchor tree" in the Garden, along with a bronze plaque in his honor.
Honored guests will be in attendance at the dedication, including Danny Eakins with the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and Tony Burnette, the Ohio State Director of the Student Veterans of America (SVA.) Family of Staff Sgt. Oakes, Rio Grande Military Honor Guard, Veterans Service Commission of Perry County and members of the armed forces active reserve/veterans will also be present. Additionally, country recording artist Jason Scott Hook will perform the national anthem and closing tribute song.
