Broadcast Production Students Embrace Service Learning
Dancing with the Athens Stars is a fundraising benefit for the Athens County Red Cross. Fashioned after the hit ABC reality show, the massive production has been a huge success. The 2011 show raised more than $40,000 for the Red Cross.
The Hocking College Broadcast Production and Engineering students provided all of the sound and video support for the show. Pre-production begins months in advance, when the students shoot and edit a video package for each of the 11 celebrity stars in the show. During the actual production, students are responsible for operating cameras, adjusting microphones, playing back pre-recorded packages and the music that the couples dance to. The two-hour program is recorded and later edited and distributed as a DVD.
Dancing with the Athens Stars is by far the largest and most elaborate production ever engineered by our students. The show requires us to use every piece of audio and video equipment we own and every skill and talent we possess. This is truly an all-encompassing capstone event for the Broadcasting students," Harry Tompkins, Coordinating Instructor, said.
Broadcasting students also participate in the recording and distribution of the Nelsonville Music Festival and A Night with the Legends, which are both fundraisers for the Stuart's Opera House.
