Caucus Fills Three Trustee Positions
Three trustee positions at Hocking College were filled on August 11 by a caucus of local boards of education presidents from Athens, Hocking and Perry counties. The caucus appointed Paula Tucker and Keith Taulbee of Hocking County and Robert Troxel of Athens County. The appointees will officially join the board September 1, 2011.

The caucus reviewed 10 applications for the three open positions and ultimately selected Tucker, Taulbee and Troxel as the "most likely fit for the college," according to Dr. Scott Anzalone, caucus chairman and president of the Logan-Hocking School Board.

Tucker was a teacher for more than 30 years within the Logan-Hocking school district and served as mayor of Logan, Ohio from 2000 to 2003.  Taulbee is a chiropractor in private practice in Logan and has been involved with the United Way of Hocking County for several years. Troxel, a Hocking College alumnus, is the current fire chief for the City of Athens, a post he has held for the past 25 years.  Each trustee will serve a term of three years.

"We are pleased to welcome the newly appointed board members and look forward to their input and motivation for positive improvements at Hocking College," Dr. Jacalyn Osborne, Interim President at Hocking College, said.

The Hocking College Board of Trustees consists of nine members, three appointed by the Governor of the State of Ohio, and six appointed by the caucus.

Information Technology Update
Hocking's Office of Information Technology is excited to announce significant updates to the College's server infrastructure over the summer, specifically in Active Directory services.   These server updates will create a more sustainable server environment that ensures high availability while remaining flexible enough to meet future campus needs.  Furthermore, these new applications will be running in a virtual environment which enables us to operate fewer physical servers while reducing hardware, software, power, cooling and data center space costs.

The new Active Directory systems focus on:
  • Allowing Hocking College to maintain control of the overall architecture while enabling diverse parts of the college to work together without sacrificing autonomy and control over local resources;
  • Providing the ability to incorporate the technology necessary to provide users with single sign-on authentication access to College resources;
  • Supporting unified identities that will be populated with data from the centralized Datatel system;
  • Supporting the distribution of client-based software and tracking of College-managed licenses;
  • Providing a common storage array for both file share storage as well as operating system storage.
Once the system design has been completed and fully implemented, all Hocking College employees and students will be issued a unique login to access college technology.  This unique login will be based upon the same standard as the a WebAdvisor ID.  These unique logins will create a more unified identification system while offering single sign-on capabilities.  The logins will enable both students and employees to have campus wide access to college resources and offer personal storage space through a network ready "My Document" folder.

Rolling out these new services will take additional time.  During this rollout process, we will be introducing new services while supporting older legacy active directory services.  We appreciate the patience and understanding through this process.

If you notice or experience issues during this time, please contact the Helpdesk for assistance.  If you'd like further information on the campus wide Active Directory solution, please feel free to contact Chief Technology Officer Ben Dalton.
Dig Photo Archaeology Students Conduct Historical Dig
Annette Ericksen, Archaeology program coordinator at Hocking College, and four of her archaeological field school students began a dig August 15 around the foundation of Thornhill Mansion in Volcano, West Virginia.

The eight-day archaeological dig was organized by Friends of Mountwood, a nonprofit volunteer organization, and funded through private donations and the Wood County Historic Landmarks Commission.

The dig is being conducted at the former home of oil and gas pioneer W.C. Stiles. The mansion was built in 1874 by Stiles, also known as the "Father of Volcano."

At the conclusion of the dig, the artifacts will be taken back to Hocking College where they will be cleaned, conserved and analyzed. Some ceramic and porcelain fragments may be able to be pieced back together.

For more information, the Parkersburg News and Sentinel featured an article about the dig in their recent publication, entitled "Dig at Mountwood Begins."
