Hocking Woods Nature Center New Home for Relocated Birds
Four new raptors are now under the care of the Hocking Woods Nature Center (HWNC.) Three birds, one red tailed hawk and two barred owls, came from FFA Camp Muskingum as a temporary transfer.
Camp Muskingum lost their nature center to a fire on the morning of April 16, 2011 and had to relocate their birds to a local rehabilitation center to provide them with proper care. However, the cages they were in were for incoming birds in need of rehabilitation.
The HWNC had two large and empty raptor cages, and a contingency of students and staff who are accustomed to caring for these type of animals.
The fourth raptor, a red tailed hawk, as been deemed non-releasable by the rehabilitator and will remain at the HWNC at the time Camp Muskingum is ready for their birds back.
The birds are in good health but have some training and handling issues, which is to be expected with the new surroundings. The wild red tail is ill mannered, since it is at the beginning of the training process. Our current resident raptor, also a barred owl, doesn't seem to mind the new arrivals.
"With this number of raptors we are ethically responsible to use all them in an educational capacity, so I am asking if anyone can help feed just one of these birds, at least one or two days a week, it would make this task profoundly more rewarding all around, " Dave Sagan, Hocking College Nature Center, said.
Please contact Dave Sagan at ext. 6326, if you are interested in assisting.

Community Outreach Center Offers Volunteer Opportunities
Elementary School Tutoring Work-study Positions Available Hocking College Youth Tutoring Program (HCYTP), an America Reads program, encourages students who have federal work-study awards as part of their financial aid package to apply for tutoring positions in local elementary schools. If you know of a student who would enjoy working with grade school-age kids, is eligible for federal work-study, has reliable transportation, and a class schedule that allows him or her to work six to ten hours per week between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., please encourage them to apply for HCYTP.
Volunteers Needed for Elementary Art Program Public school funding cuts have forced elementary schools to cut art education. Local teachers have asked if Hocking College students might be interested in planning art activities for their elementary school kids. Teachers have some art supplies. Also, if we get a group of Hocking students together to regularly organize and implement activities with the kids, we can host fundraisers to raise money for supplies for special art projects. If you know of any students who are creative and like working with young children, please encourage them to assist.
Americorp Assistance Needed Students in Service (SIS) is a part-time AmeriCorps program designed just for full time students. Participants must complete 300 hours of service to the community in one calendar year to earn a $1,175 education award. Hocking College practicum experiences and internships may count toward the 300-hour goal, if they are performed in a service-oriented workplace. HCYTP (see above) work-study elementary school tutoring hours count, too.
Many other volunteer and service learning opportunities are offered to Hocking students throughout the year. Please encourage them to contact coordinator Suzanne Brooks-Korner at 740.753.7111 to request a copy of the Service Site list. Students may also stop by the Community Outreach Center, JL 249K, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. -12 p.m., to discover how they can make a difference in the world while studying at Hocking.
