Veterans' Memorial Fund Seeking Donations
You may recall receiving an all staff e-mail in mid-May announcing efforts to honor and memorialize one of Hocking's graduates from the Natural Resources program.  Staff Sgt. Curtis A. Oakes, who was affectionately called "Oak," was killed serving our country in Afghanistan.  Since that e-mail, the Hocking College Foundation has become involved, and the project has expanded to include the creation of a College arboretum with an oak tree to be planted in Curtis' memory, as an "anchor tree" for a section of the arboretum to be called the Veterans' Memorial Garden.  Dedication of the tree planting in memory of Staff Sgt. Curtis A. Oakes will take place sometime in September with a specific date and time to be provided at a later time.

An account has been established in the Foundation titled, "Hocking College Veterans' Memorial Fund" into which initial contributions have been deposited.  We are soliciting employee support to cover the cost of a bronze plaque to place in the Natural Resources area and a bronze plaque to place with the tree.

Checks can be made payable to Hocking College Foundation and sent to Ted Swallow in Financial Services.  Place "Veterans' Memorial" in the memo section of the check to designate the funds.  The Foundation will also be providing financial support for this effort.

Thanks to those of you who have already contributed.  You will be receiving acknowledgement from the Foundation of your contribution for tax purposes.  Contributions to this fund are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Board of Trustees to Fill Vacant Positions
Many of you are aware that Hocking College Board of Trustees is making preparations to fill vacant positions.  The process for appointment to a board of trustees in the State of Ohio is delineated within Ohio Revised Code, 3357.05 and addressed specific to Hocking College in the Bylaws of the Board of Trustees.

In summary, there are nine members of the Board, three of whom are appointed by the Governor of the State of Ohio and six appointed by a caucus, each for a term of three years.  Appointees must be qualified electors residing within our district (Athens, Hocking and Perry) and cannot be employees of the College.

Since the late 60's, there has been a "gentlemen's agreement" that the caucus positions are equally distributed among the three counties in Hocking College's district.  Currently vacant positions include one Athens County and one Hocking County seat.  In addition, the term of another Hocking County position expires August 31, 2011.  Should the trustee choose to do so, he may submit his name for reappointment, as a trustee may serve an unlimited number of consecutive terms.

The term of office for those appointed by the caucus is September 1 through August 31. The caucus is called into session by the president of the board of education of the school district with the largest enrollment of students.  This is currently the Logan-Hocking School District.  Preparations for the caucus are in progress for sometime late July or early August.

Please encourage people you know who are supporters of Hocking College and are people of integrity and willing to give of their time and talent, to send their resume to the College care of Nancy Vandeman, by July 18th.  Information about the role of trustee can be found in Ohio Revised Code (3357.09). Additional information appears on the Ohio Board of Regents website.
