Your Invitation to Graduation
Come help us celebrate the best day of the academic year, Hocking College graduation. This is not just a celebration of the accomplishments of our students, but also a celebration of Hocking College and all that it represents to the entire campus community.
Mike Budzik, Hocking College alumni and former Chief of the Ohio Division of Wildlife, will address 557 graduates who are expected to receive degrees and/or certificates in two ceremonies on Sunday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Hocking College Student Center Multiplex.
New this year, we will invite each graduate to bring $1 to the ceremony. During the ceremony, we will invite the graduates to donate the dollar, and any additional amount, to the "Class of 2011 Scholarship Fund." The results of their generous giving will be announced on the alumni webpage, and we hope to start up a little healthy competition between past and future classes to begin and grow their own honorary scholarship funds. Earnings from the investment of these funds, although small at the beginning, will hopefully grow as the fund itself grows. In the meantime, the Foundation will assist with an annual scholarship award until the fund can function on its own. Please encourage your student graduates to bring their dollar to commencement.
A VIP enclosure next to the stage at graduation will be provided for faculty and staff to meet, greet and congratulate grads as soon as they have received their degrees.
For more information please contact Giles Lee at 740.753.6539 or visit the Hocking College Commencement webpage. |
Massage & Spa Students Provide Free Services to Faculty & Staff
The Spa Management and Massage and Spa Therapy students gave free spa hand and foot treatments to Hocking College faculty and staff on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Jeannie Faulkner, coordinating instructor, indicated that offering the "spa day" was the students' way of expressing appreciation for the staff and faculty's hard work and dedication. This also offered a great opportunity for the students to gain valuable hands-on experience. The treatments were free of charge to any Hocking College employee and were 20 minutes in length. They began with a soothing aromatherapy epsom salt soak followed by a therapeutic exfoliation treatment with himalayan salts and pure jojoba oil. Faculty and staff were treated to a soothing warm stone massage while practitioners utilized the ancient knowledge of reflexology, working with specific points in the hands or feet to help relax and heal. |
Reporting Suspicious Activity
As discussed in a previous issue of Verbatim, each of us is responsibility for maintaining a safe and secure community not only for the student body and visitors, but also for faculty and staff. A team effort is required for all of us to be consistent in reporting suspicious activity and/or crimes on campus, such as suspicious people, vehicle entries, stalking events and domestic situations.
Anytime a suggestion of possible criminal activity takes place, contact the Hocking College Police Department immediately at 740.753.6598 or ext. 6598. Timely reporting of any suspicious people and activity is critical in aiding the HCPD in solving a variety of crimes.
The following is an example of why reporting suspicious activity is essential to the safety of all of us:
Sgt. Tom McKnight and Ofc. Brian Sass received a complaint about two suspicious males in a vehicle on main campus. When the officers went to investigate, they found that the two subjects were in possession of prescription drugs that they were freebasing (melting). After taking the subjects into custody and subsequently to the regional jail, two students came into the HCPD and advised that their vehicles were broken into, and items stolen. While taking the report, it was found out that the vehicle that was operated by the suspicious males contained the items that were reported stolen from the two students.
Thank you for your ongoing assistance in reporting suspicious activity, so that we can ensure our campus continues to be a safe and secure learning environment. |

Student Provides Exceptional Pro-Bono Work for Nonprofit
Photography instructor Kathy Bick passed along a glowing review she received from Molly Roth of Hocking.Athens.Perry. Community Action, regarding Josh Kern, student in the American Art, Design and Marketing program. Molly comments in a letter that when the agency decided to update some of their marketing materials, they recruited Joshua to take photos on a pro-bono basis.
"Despite the fact that he was providing his talents for free, Josh worked hard on this project for three months, driving to various service sites, and even accompanying Laurelville's Head Start class on a field trip to the airport," Molly remarks in the letter.
Kudos to Kathy Bick and Joshua Kern for making this partnership between Hocking College and Hocking.Athens.Perry. Community Action a success.
