JOMc Scholarships Awarded to 17 Local Students
We are pleased to announce that 17 students in Athens, Hocking, Perry and Fairfield counties have been awarded the 2011-12 Jack O. McClenaghan (JOMc) Scholarship.

The scholarships are awarded to first and second year students in the four-county area who are deemed most likely to succeed, based on their application and references and not on financial need. Each JOMc Scholarship recipient is awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Recipients are engaged in a variety of programs including those in the schools of Arts and Sciences; Health and Nursing; McClenaghan Center for Hospitality; Engineering, Computer and Information Technology; and Natural Resources.

The JOMc Scholarship honors Lancaster resident and businessman Jack O. McClenaghan. The McClenaghan Center for Hospitality Training at Hocking College was named in honor of McClenaghan, founder of the JOMc Scholarship Fund and a former chairman of the Hocking College Foundation. The JOMc scholarship was originally created by donations from faculty and staff, and community fundraisers, and now has in excess of $900,000 in the scholarship fund.

"On Jack's behalf, we would like to thank the community, Hocking College and all past and future donors for their ongoing investment in today's students, and tomorrow's future.  Jack's dream was to build the scholarship fund to over $1 million and today we have almost reached that mark,"  Anne Polenchar, JOMc Scholarship Fund Board Member, said.

The 2011 recipients include Tess Cassady of Logan, Jennifer Fisher of McArthur, Shelly Greene of Lancaster, Nicholas Eing of Trimble, Tracey Sortman of Centerville, Joo Yeon Kim of Athens, Kelcie Servers of Dayton, Jessica Merckle of Moxahala, Gabrielle Kruskamp of Pomeroy, Shanika Thompson of Nelsonville, Derek Bycofski of Lancaster, Thomas Polston of Wauseon, Kaitlynn Lent of Glouster, Toni Oskey of Glouster, Rachael Vermillian of Union Furnace, Justin Newton of Chesterhill,  and Skyler Everett of New Lexington.
Construction Management - Carpentry Students Help Habitat for HumanityCarpentry
On May 10, 2011 Construction Management-Carpentry students traveled to Jacksonville to work on an Athens County Habitat for Humanity home. The group of 20 second-year students spent the day installing roof trusses on the project.  Two of the current Construction Management students, Seth Carpenter and Steven Peters, are voluntarily co-managing the project for Habitat.

The newly revived relationship between Hocking College's Construction Management-Carpentry program and Habitat for Humanity is a "win-win" experience. The students learn the challenges and rewards of project management on a first-hand basis, and Habitat benefits from a more organized, efficient project.

Plans are already developing for next year's Habitat project that will be constructed in Nelsonville.
Chesterhill
Historical Interpretation Students Offer Programming
Three Historical Interpretation students will present a program about the history of the Underground Railroad at the Multi-Cultural Genealogical Center in Chesterhill on Monday, May 23 at 7 p.m.

The program focuses on the historic house, which is the home of the genealogical center, and its specific involvement in the Underground Railroad, on which it served as a station. The program will bring this period of history to life with the names and activities of the founders of Chesterhill.  The students have used deeds, census records and written history to piece together the story.

Final Fridays to Host Nelsonville Farmer's Market
Nelsonville will now host a Farmer's Market, in the Historic Square in downtown Nelsonville, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. during Final Fridays.

The interest in having a farmers market in Nelsonville was spurred by a recent community assessment by Ruth Dudding of the Athens City-County Health Department. Nelsonville residents identified a lack of options and access to healthy food.

Starting May 27, Nelsonville residents can enjoy produce and goods from Vest Berries Farm, Shade River Organic Farm, Shagbark Seed & Mill and others. The market will boast a wide variety of seasonal fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, eggs, herbs and baked goods.

The Farmers Market will be every Final Friday through October.

Community Assistance and Kudos Offered for the Nelsonville Music Festival

As a testament to the community support for the Nelsonville Music Festival, a group of attendees have offered to start a fundraising campaign to assist with the reseeding of the Hocking College grounds at the site of the festival.

Although the Hocking College facilities department has committed to taking care of repairing the field, any support that festival attendees are willing to provide will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks to Fox's Hocking Hills Canoe Livery

The Student Support Services (SSS) program at Hocking College would like to thank owners Aaron and Valerie Fox of Fox's Hocking Hills Canoe Livery for their generosity. Both Aaron and Valerie have experiences at Hocking College as students and / or faculty and actively seek to hire Hocking College students every summer to help run the Livery.

Knowing that money is tight for grant funded programs, and that the SSS budget for cultural experiences was slim to none, Aaron and Valerie sent 14 Hocking College students, faculty, alumni, and family on the river free of charge this year. Aaron explained that it is his pleasure to get Hocking College students out on the river.

Without their generosity, this year's participants of the Student Support Services program at Hocking College would not have had the opportunity to experience the river as many students have for the past several years. Again, a big thank you goes out to Fox's Hocking Hills Canoe Livery for their generosity and expertise in making all our experiences on the Hocking River safe and pleasurable.
