Phase Two of Campus Landscaping Project to Begin
The second of two phases to beautify the entryway into main campus will begin this week.  In an effort to make the entry more aesthetically appealing to prospective and current students, the Landscape Project Management capstone class will collaborate with the Hocking College professional grounds crew to revamp the area outside of John Light Hall and Oakley Hall.

The landscaping will use materials originally purchased for phase one of the project. Additionally, the students will be training and using new pieces of equipment as part of the educational process.

As a technical college, we pride ourselves on this type of practical hands-on learning, and send kudos to Landscape Management program coordinating instructor Andrew Freeman for developing this innovative, collaborative idea to teach students.
Music Professors and Students Attend Texas Music Conference
South by Southwest
Hocking College student Kyle Plunkett spends time with Joey Kramer of Aerosmith.

Last month music professors Mike Eubanks and Josh Antonuccio took a group of students on an exciting trip to the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference in Austin, Texas. The festival offers the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and upcoming technologies.  A highlight of their trip was listening to keynote speakers Yoko Ono, and Live Aid organizer Bob Geldoff.

"All I can say is "Wow!" South by Southwest was by far the best trip I have ever been on. It was so awesome to dedicate four days of my life just to music. I saw so many great shows and learned so much about the industry," Jesse Mitten, music student, said.
Help Keep Campus Safe, Secure and Beautiful
Although our primary goal is to educate the students here at Hocking College, we are also responsible for maintaining a safe and secure community for not only the student body and visitors, but also for faculty and staff.

Director of Campus Safety, Chief Al Matthews, requests that everyone do their part in keeping our campus safe, secure and beautiful.  This will take a team effort for all of us to be consistent in reporting suspicious activity and/or crimes on campus, such as suspicious people, vehicle entries, stalking events and domestic situations.  Anytime a suggestion of possible criminal activity takes place, contact the Hocking College Police Department immediately.

Timing is critical.  Contacting the police immediately with any suspicious activity will increase their ability to solve the matter.
  • Please review the following safety tips from Chief Matthews:
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Stay in well-lit areas.
  • Walk with someone or call Campus Police for escort.
  • If you observe a suspicious person or vehicle on any Hocking College Campuses:

a)    Take a deep breath

b)    Get a description of person(s) and/or vehicle (Clothing, color of vehicle, damage to vehicle or torn clothing)

c)    License plate numbers

d)    If you can hear what is being said, remember to listen to their speech patterns (Slang words used, they may talk with a speech impediment (Slur, Stutter, or Lisp)

  • Direction of travel - Did they leave by foot, bike, motorcycle, car, van or truck?
  • Did they go into a building? Which building?
  • Please familiarize yourself with the Hocking College Police Department phone number of 740.753.6598 or ext. 6598.
This information will aid the Hocking College Campus Police in identifying suspicious people, activity and solving a variety of crimes.  Thank you for your ongoing assistance.

Choir Provides Back-Up Vocals for Todd Rundgren
Rundgren photo Professor George Hertzel led his choir on two successful performances as back up vocalists for legendary rock musician Todd Rundgren's tour.

On March 30, Rundgren and the choir performed at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo. Hertzel used his long relationship with Rundgren to offer the students this rare opportunity. The choir was treated to a beautiful catered dinner, and was very well taken care of by the theater staff. Their performance went off without a hitch and Hertzel was very proud of how they represented Hocking.

Their final performance was on April 1, at the historic Southern Theater in Columbus. Their performance earned acclaim by both Rundgren and the sold-out audience. The students, who are aspiring musicians, audio engineers, technicians, producers and writers, were really proud of their performances.

Hertzel was very thankful to Laurel Ransom, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Charlene Suggs for their help in organizing the trip and for their constant support of the program. Hertzel also is very thankful of Rundgren for this amazing opportunity he provided for his students.

New Bike Racks Installed on Campus
Please be aware that the College is installing new bike racks on campus. The first installation of bike racks is located around the School of Natural Resources Building on the north end of campus. The new bike racks, are not only sturdier, but will also accommodate approximately 60 bikes, replacing the older racks that had space for eight bikes.

Funding for the new racks was generated from the new parking fees. We will continue to add more bike racks each quarter until we have the entire campus adequately covered. The Student Center will be the next location to have new bike racks.

We hope the new bike racks accommodate all members of our campus community that currently ride bicycles to, from and around campus. We also hope it encourages new riders to ride a bike to campus if they are able. This helps reduce parking issues, saves you money, helps the College reduce its carbon footprint and is good for your health!

Broadcast Students Awarded Technology Apprentice Scholarship

Students Amber Stilson and Matt McMillan have been awarded the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) Technical Apprenticeship Scholarship which includes an all-expense paid trip to the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in Las Vegas Nevada, a radio conference at Microsoft in California as well as a paid internship at a modern digital facility, probably WBNS in Columbus, Ohio.

On March 30, 2011, the students began the Technology Apprenticeship Program with an informational webinar featuring experts from the National Association of Broadcasters and Society of Broadcast Engineers. This month, the students will attend the NAB show and will interact with leaders in the broadcast industry.  In May, students will participate in Radio Ink Convergence Conference held at the Silicon Valley campus of Microsoft.

This summer, the students will complete a two-month hands on apprenticeship at a radio or television station, and then will wrap up their experience with the apprentice program by spending one week at the NAB headquarters in Washington, D.C., developing a webcast that will be presented at the end of their visit.

Congratulations Matt and Amber, and to instructor Harry Tompkins, Broadcast Production and Engineering Coordinating Instructor!
