Flash Points Forum Available for Internal Discussions
Last week's email messages regarding Senate Bill 5 remind us that Hocking College welcomes and supports the free exchange of ideas and opinions.  To enable everyone at the College to debate and discuss such important issues, we developed the Flash Point Forum last year, and would like to remind the campus community how it can be used.

To participate in Flash Points Forum, please visit http://forum.hocking.edu and either use your existing account information to login or click "Register."  Use your college WebAdvisor or Email ID as your username (e.g., smith_j) and choose a password.  Once your account has been activated, you can browse existing Forum categories, which now include a new category entitled, "Legislation and Politics" to accommodate further discussion on the current legislative session.  Other Forum categories include "For Sale" and "Lost and Found."  You can even "subscribe" to a Forum category, so you will be immediately notified when new entries are made.  (Look for the "subscribe forum" link in the light blue bar.)

You may also access the Forum at the "Faculty and Staff" page of our Hocking website.  Click on the green Login button, and enter "employee" for username and "intranet123" for password (sans quotation marks).  From there, click on the Flash Points Forum under the left-hand column.

Flash Points Forum is a great place to interact with other campus employees, whenever the topics of discussion are not directly related to our daily business operations.  The Forum is in no way intended to restrict communications; instead, we hope it will help us make the best use of our various lines of communication.
Valentine's Day Concourse Display Contest Winners
Door WinnerHocking College staff members decorated their doors and office windows aligning the John Light Hall Concourse in celebration of Valentine's Day.  The winner of the contest was the door at JL179 - Jodie Lewis, Carrie Arnold, Kellee George, Katie Owen and Christy Cunningham.  The theme of the winning décor was "The Many Languages of Love, We Are One Hocking!" (Pictured (L to R) Jodie Lewis and Carrie Arnold.)  Sue Chiki, Associate Provost, said students have been appreciative of the decorations on the Concourse.  Also impressive, according to the judges of the contest, is that the decorations have all been altruistic in nature, featuring themes such as diversity, Red Cross donations and highlighting special attributes of Hocking employees. Thanks to everyone for their participation and look for the next contest to be held for the Fourth of July holiday.

United Appeal for Athens County
United AppealGifts to United Appeal (UA) for Athens County support the continued direct work of 12 partner agencies, including Athens County Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Athens County and United Seniors of Athens County.  Contributions also support United Appeal's new program, Athens County 2-1-1, a service for Athens County residents to "Get Help and Give Help" 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Since the service started in February 2010, a free call to 2-1-1 has led over 500 people to referrals to get help meeting basic needs, health care needs, find general community and government services, find help after the September 16, 2010 windstorms and give help by making donations and volunteering.

"Hocking College faculty and staff are an inspiring source of contributions to United Appeal.  In addition to the financial gifts from individuals at Hocking College, many staff members have served on the United Appeal board of directors and others have spent thousands of hours volunteering for our partner agencies.  We are a small community that have a powerful impact when we give to others, thank you to the people of Hocking College for your sincere generosity," Pam Harvey, UA Executive Director, said.

The STARS Ceremony for this quarter will be held on February 23, 2011 at 7pm in the Student Center Multiplex and will be honoring achievements from fall quarter.  The entire Hocking College community is invited and welcome to attend.

Hocking Receives Free Humvee on "Permanent Loan"
Hocking College has received a free "permanent loan" of a Humvee decommissioned by the US military.  A program within the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service Law Enforcement Support Office allows the military to offer their decommissioned vehicles to other government agencies at no cost to that agency.  The Humvee can be used indefinitely and branded with the Hocking College logo and information.  When we no longer have a use or need for the vehicle, we will return it to the military.

Thanks to Pete Celaya

John Chappelear sends his gratitude to Pete Celaya of the Information Technology Department.   An accident on Route 33 on Friday, February 18, 2011 resulted in a power outage for Hocking College. Once power was restored, Pete came in on his scheduled vacation day on Friday to get all the servers back up and running, which returned functionality to Colleague systems. Thanks for your dedication, Pete!
