Cross-Cultural Night, "Hall of Nations" Dedication

One Hocking Logo Hocking College Cross-Cultural Night will be held at the Student Center Multiplex on February 2, 2011 from 6 - 9 p.m., along with a dedication of the "Hall of Nations," to mark the anniversary of the "We Are One Hocking" initiative to celebrate diversity.

All members of the community are invited to attend the second annual Cross-Cultural Night. Throughout the evening, Hocking international students will host displays, offer fine international cuisine, music, dancing and other entertainment representing their culture. The international students are from areas such as Senegal, Jamaica, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Gambia, China, Syria and Sri-Lanka.

Additionally, President Erickson, will dedicate the Student Center lobby as the "Hall of Nations."  The new Hall of Nations will display flags from around the world above the walkway, adding to the peace poles installed last year that offer messages of peace in eight languages.  Throughout the year, art depicting multi-cultural scenery will be added to the Hall of Nations, highlighting topics such as Black History Month and Holocaust Remembrance.

"Cross-Cultural Night and the dedication of the new "Hall of Nations" is yet another way for the Hocking community to embrace and share our differences, while reinforcing that we are truly One Hocking," Giles Lee, Director of Co-Curricular Education, said.

The "We Are One Hocking" initiative is an ongoing campaign of the Hocking College Diversity Council.  The "One Hocking" initiative reinforces the emphasis on celebrating differences and providing a campus where all students are afforded a safe learning environment.
Red Cross Donations
Student Fundraiser Benefits Red Cross
During Fall Quarter 2010, the Business Sales Class (BUS 130) implemented a fundraising project to raise money for the Athens Chapter of the Red Cross.  Twenty-six students, divided into three sales teams, sold 1,279 candy bars, creating a net profit of $550 that was donated.  The students voted and requested that 50 percent of the funds be used for victims of the September 16, 2010 tornado and the other 50 percent to be used for victims of house fires, in honor of Ryan Seitz, a fallen firefighter from Vinton County.  Way to go!
Student Paintings Displayed in Dining Hall

Take a moment to enjoy the acrylic paintings from Mark Hackworth's fall quarter Design 1 class that are now being displayed in the John Light Dining Hall.

Battery Recycling Containers to be Distributed
Battery recycling containers will be distributed to 12 locations throughout campus, mainly department offices.  Once the containers are full, Ron Mash or Joe Wakeman will collect the batteries and deposit them in a central holding container.  They will then bring the batteries to Clean Harbors to properly dispose and recycle the materials, as needed.

If you have larger batteries or any other potentially hazardous material that you are unclear how to handle, please contact Joe Wakeman, ext. 6098.

Art and Music Programs Important to Hocking Community

by Randy Ware, Associate Dean,
Arts & Sciences

If you haven't walked by President Erickson's office recently you've missed out on a new piece of artwork. Faculty member and artist Brian Alloway used his considerable talents at glasswork to produce an incredible representation of the Hocking College logo. While strolling through the cafeteria you may have noticed the work of Mark Hackworth's Fall quarter Design I course adorning the walls (collaborative acrylic paintings produced for final projects). Perhaps last quarter you were able to enjoy one of the Lunchtime Concerts performed by students of our music program (more to come this quarter!).

While they are located in disparate locations about campus and exist, often times, in their own creative vortex, the Art and Music programs are an integral part of our department and of our mission to extend the knowledge and experience of the arts to our students and our community. The sign for Washington Hall, home of our music program, is located at the northern entrance to our town of Nelsonville and reminds residents and travelers that Hocking College is a part of this place. The Art Gallery, located on the historic Nelsonville square, serves not just as a facility for our students to produce their art, but as a focal point during Final Fridays and an opportunity to showcase the vision and craftsmanship of our students and faculty. Our presence on the square and in Washington hall is a message to the community that our commitment to society extends beyond academics and into the creative ether that expands the human experience.
