New Year, New Look
With the retirement of Judy Sinnott, the former Office of Campus and Community Relations has now been merged with the Marketing Office to form the combined Office of Marketing and Public Relations.  Laura Alloway, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, will now be responsible for the media relations, branding, advertising and communications functions of the college.

Verbatim has also been revised from a PDF to an electronic format, both in an effort to reduce costs and create a more intuitive interface.  Please pass along any campus news items, and of course items of note for our Kudos Korner, to Laura Alloway at ext. 6171.
Student in Service Scholarships Offered
Ohio Campus Compact has made available ten $1,100 Students in Service scholarships, specifically to students attending Hocking College.

To earn the $1,100 scholarship, students are required to complete 300 hours of community service over the course of 12 months.  Many Hocking College students are already involved in these activities as part of their coursework.  Community service can include:
  • Academic and co-curricular service-learning;
  • Non-paid, academic internships with service-focus;
  • Practicum hours, such a nursing, counseling, EMT and firefighting;
  • Community service in the areas of education, public safety, environmental initiatives, community development and human services;
  • Federal or state-funded community service work-study positions, the only eligible paid positions;
  • Student teachers who qualify; and,
  • Most volunteer work, including tutoring, mentoring, stream restoration and volunteer recruitment
Please consider promoting this opportunity to your students.  For additional information, or to offer a brief presentation about the scholarship to any of your classes, contact Ben Hastil at 740.753.6519 or stop by John Light Hall 251.
Parking Permit Reminder
Parking Student parking permits are now required as of the first day of winter quarter for all student parking areas on the main campus.  Parking Services will begin ticketing those students not displaying the proper permit after January 10, 2011. Students can purchase permits at the Cashier & Records office at the John Light Concourse for $35 per quarter.  Please remind students to obtain the required permits as soon as possible.
Faculty/Staff Parking Changes
Please be aware of a few modifications to the parking lots on campus as we welcome students back for winter quarter.

In an effort to provide additional student parking spaces, two rows of dedicated faculty/staff spaces in the John Light Hall parking lot are now designated as "general parking" which may be used by students, faculty and/or staff.  These spaces are indicated by white stripes.

52 parking spaces for faculty/staff have been added in the two new lots along Loop Road.  There are currently 242 dedicated faculty/staff parking spaces available on campus.

Rocky Brands Pledges Donations

Mike Brooks, CEO and Chairman of Rocky Brands, recently pledged his ongoing support for Hocking College.  At a December 15, 2010 Hocking College Foundation meeting, during a discussion about the Foundation's annual giving campaign, Mike offered to match all donations made by the Foundation board members.  At the same meeting, the entire Foundation board pledged 100 percent participation in giving by all board members.

Rocky Brands has also made a recent donation of a large truck for use by the Forestry Department.  Forestry program students and the Hocking College community will benefit from Rocky Brands and Mike's generosity for years to come.
