Hello Old Friend!...Summer is Back in the Northland
Many of you have heard me use the phrase "there's no such thing as average". Well this spring and early summer has, once again, proven that statement to be true, indeed. As mentioned in earlier letters, Moose Lake went "ice free" on March 25th (nearly two weeks earlier than ever) and shortly thereafter, the walleyes were spawning. Soon after that, however, we experienced a prolonged cold spell with temperatures falling into the low teens for many nights. Typically the suckers start their annual routine not long after the walleyes are done...but because of the cold weather, they didn't "get going" until early May...about normal. Early to mid May brought us unseasonably warm & dry weather...which got the smallmouth bass thinking about moving into the shallows. The water temperature in some places had reached the magical 58-60 degree mark needed to start the bass spawning. Then the rains came, as the Northland received up to 5 inches of rain near the end of the month. All the moisture caused the water temps to "tank", dropping some 5 or 6 degrees and shutting the smallmouth bass down. That brings us to now! The bass are back on schedule and about normal timing at that! The extra rain was welcome too, as lake levels have come up to above average levels for this time of the season and there are currently no fire restrictions. Well I guess it is true...there really is no such thing as average, but like an old friend, summer has returned to the Northland! Continuing Updates: The eagle are back on the nest across from the base, on the island we call "Steak Island". An unusually high number of moths and butterflies have shown up at Moose Lake this spring and early summer. We've been graced with a wonderful display of Monarch butterflies, Luna, Polyphemus, Cecropias moths & many others. How's that deck coming along? Well I'm happy to say we're making good progress and we're looking forward to making the west end of the building accessible to all of our guest soon. For continuing info on the Highway 1 construction project south of Ely, make sure you check on the Hwy 1 detour link, if you are planning to come up from the North Shore (Hwy 61). To all our canoeing friends...safe traveling! Dave
