THE FISHING CORNER
LD Bass
Nice spring smallmouth
As the winter fishing season starts to wind down, attention is drawn towards the upcoming open water season. In the Boundary Waters, the bass fishing season opens at the same time as pike and walleye fishing (on May 12th) unlike much of the rest of the state (two weeks later). On border waters like Basswood and Knife Lakes, and in Quetico, bass fishing is open year 'round.

Generally, smallmouth bass fishermen don't fish in May expecting the kind of topwater action you would in June...around spawning time. There is a pattern, though, that can get you into some of the best bass fishing of the season. Pre-spawn smallmouth bass (water under 58 degrees) for the most part hang out in deeper water off of ledges and drop offs near eventual spawning areas. There is a period of time, however, when smallmouth bass will move into very shallow water....not to spawn...but to sun and feed after a long, cold water period were feeding was seemingly an after thought.

Dark rocky or soft bottom, shallow bays warm up earlier

Not long after ice-out, smallmouth bass will seek out shallow, muck bottom  bays (more typical of largemouth bass) or shallow dark rocky bottom because they warm up faster. That's also where other aquatic "stuff" is coming to life...drawing in baitfish and in turn, bringing in the bass! Think of it as a warm water "spring break" for smallmouth!

This pre-spawn feeding period can last for a week to 10 days and if your timing is right, a whole variety of lures from jigs to topwater lures can be effective.

So, when you start thinking about early season fishing, don't forget those hungry early season smallmouth bass.

How's the Winter Going?

Going back to early last summer, we were in the midst of below average rainfall leading into severe drought conditions. Much of our precipitation shortfall went relatively unnoticed as surrounding areas were still getting some rain. Some might say that the drought culminated in the Pagami Creek Fire in September, but the dry conditions had continued deep into this winter.

Much below average snowfall so far

While short term forecasts seem to change on a daily basis, it appears as though the long term precipitation forecast for late winter and early spring is suggesting a change. Within the last few weeks it seems as though the pattern on snowfall has increased a bit. As recent as the beginning of February, we were some 25" below average on the snow total to date. The bad thing was that this came on the heels of one of the driest falls on record. Since about the second weekend of February, however, we've received some decent snowfall. We've had several inches of snow recently. This certainly bodes well for getting lake levels back up, but we need some more.

As of the writing of this article, a winter storm has come through Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin. Parts of both states received big snow totals but unfortunately most of that fell south of us. The trend looks better, however and on the good side of things, spring is just around the corner when spring rains can make substantial gains in the deficit. Weather patterns can change fast, though and 2007 is a good example of that, as we had very dry conditions through a good part of the summer....followed by record rains in the fall.
