Rapala smallmouth
You simply cannot have a conversation about favorite Boundary Waters fishing lures and not include a Floating Rapala! Some folks will argue, especially in early summer, "it's all you need!"

It all began back in the 1930's when the lure's namesake, Finnish fisherman Lauri Rapala, simply professed..."Big fish eat little fish" and set out to create a lure that would imitate one of those little fish. And as the saying goes...the rest is history.

The original Floating Rapala catches a variety of fish, but may be best known in these parts as a smallmouth bass "classic". At the point when waters warm into the 50's, smallmouth start moving into shallow water, mostly for food and warmth at first but eventually to go through their age old spawning ritual. From late May through early July, smallmouth bass cruise the shallow waters in search of food...often including injured baitfish. There's a famous old add slogan that goes something like "don't leave home without it". Well, when it come to fishing the Canoe Country & a Floating Rapala...don't go out without one!fl rapala

CHANGES IN BOUNDARY WATERS PERMIT RESERVATIONS

Entry Points

For several years now, the U.S. Forest Service along with Reserve America (Recreation.gov) has begun the permit reservation process with an application period followed by a lottery (held in Mid-January). Due to a lack of necessity, according to the Forest Service, this process will be changing. With the exception of a hand full of entry points, all permits will become available on a first come, first serve basis...with January 25th (at 9:00am cst) being the "go live" date.

Now the exceptions. The permits that fall under the Moose Lake and Fall Lake entries will, for this go 'round, remain on a lottery process. These permits include overnight paddle and motor, as well as day use motor (Fall Lake D, Moose Lake F...Moose Chain & Moose Lake G...Moose to Basswood).

Demand issues with these entry points where motor use was involved was the reason to, at least for now, leave the lottery process in place. Because overnight paddle and motor permits are drawn from a single quota the paddle permits could not be separated from the motor permits for a "go live" process. The application period for the lottery permits is from 12/19/11 to 1/19/12 with the lottery being held on January 20th. Unfortunately this is the part of booking a canoe trip that doesn't always seem simple. The bottom line is make your plans early to ensure the best available entry point for the date you can go and don't hesitate to give us a call if you have questions about the permit process or getting everything lined up for your 2012 Boundary Waters trip.

Happily, we can add...to those considering a Quetico trip... that process remains the same as 2011...as of now :)
