Deep Thunderstick
It's hard to believe, especially this summer, but we have had a few cool nights recently and the bugs are really tapering off. That means it's already mid-August! There's plenty of time to get a late summer/early fall canoe trip in.
One of the really effective fishing techniques to use this time of the season is "open water trolling". Now this isn't the "run of the mill" throw a lure behind the canoe and paddle, method. This is targeted trolling with specific types of diving lures...like  Storm Lure's original "Deep Thundersticks" These type of lures will run 20 or 25 feet deep on 50 yds of line. The target...all of the game fish in the Canoe Country. At this time of the year, bass, walleyes, pike and lake trout will often suspend out over deep water while chasing baitfish such as ciscos or whitefish. It's not uncommon to find fish 20-30 feet deep over 50- 80 feet of water. So, if a trip is still in the plans this season, ask us about this method and maybe you can put a few more fish in the canoe.

Canoe Country

The Canoe Country lies within the Rainy River and Hunters Island districts of Ontario, and the Superior National Forest of Northern Minnesota.  It's primitive beauty and thousand of crystal clear lakes have remained unchanged throughout the centuries.

Today, as in the past, it is the land of the canoeist, and offers glorious opportunity for adventure, a sense of survival living, fun of outdoor life, and freedom from the pressures of civilization.  This area has been preserved as unique canoe country.  Public roads do not penetrate the area.  Aircraft, except those on official duty, are prohibited from flying below and elevation of 4,000 feet.
Travel is possible only by canoe.  The canoe country is one of the few places in the world where there is no pollution.  The traveler may drink right from the spring-fed crystal-clear lakes.
