Summer Visitors
Spring and early summer in the Northwoods never ceases to amaze me. The explosion of plants and animals this time of year almost seems to be designed to make us forget about winter past. It was just a few short weeks ago that you could look through the woods to see the rocky terrain that makes the Boundary Waters famous, not to mention the white stuff and ice that gripped the lakes.
Now, with the countless blossoming bushes and trees, not to mention what seems like a thousand shades of new green vegetation, all but the most dramatic cliffs, outcroppings...and portages, are neatly tucked away for the summer.
That lush greenery can hold a treasure, though, for those who take the time and have the patience to look. The spring and early summer migration of birds can be spectacular. Like the gray catbird (above) or the magnolia warbler (below), many of our summer visitors and residents seek refuge among the bushes and trees along the canoe routes of the Boundary Waters. It doesn't take a lot of effort for a chance to see them, but you won't see them paddling down the middle of the lake! So, for all you summer visitors (of the human variety), when you're traversing the waters of the Canoe Country this summer, make sure you take the time to cruse the shoreline and watch for some of our "other" summer visitors.
