5 Tips for E-mail Marketing Success
Keep these 5 tips in mind the next time you're putting together an e-mail marketing message to be sent to your clients.
  • Focus on your subject line: The first challenge is to get people to open your e-mail. Stand out in your client's inbox by being clever or offering a solution to a customer need. For example, did you notice how the subject line of this e-mail teases this set of useful tips?
  • Keep it short: The average length of e-mail marketing messages keeps getting shorter. Target 700-800 words. People are busy and don't want to read long messages.
  • Use bulleted lists: A famous survey from Jakob Neilsen found that only 11% of people read e-mail messages carefully. Bulleted lists allow you to organize your message and hit the reader with keywords that catch their attention.
  • Tell stories: A good story is extremely powerful. If you're pitching a product, tell a story about how it helped another client. Practice your storytelling to connect more effectively.   
  • Read your newsletter out-loud: This might sound crazy but try it. Does your article sound like a commercial? If so, rewrite it and strive for a conversational tone. Readers don't want heavy sales pitches.
