Division-Specific Initiatives
Joint Divisional Based · CoSIDA's DII and DIII SIDA Boards, along with NCAA Statistics, are completing a proposal for a new joint score/stat reporting process. A joint proposal from DII-SIDA and the NCAA was put in front of the entire DII SIDA Board on June 16th and it was unanimously approved. Jim Wright of the NCAA then had a conference call with DIII-SIDA leadership on June 17th to show them what the DII leadership/NCAA had developed. These proposals were then discussed with respective membership groups at the CoSIDA Convention.
Division III · John Humenik, Barb Kowal and Will Roleson visited with Dan Dutcher, NCAA VP for DIII, and Director of NCAA Division III Leah Kareti in Indianapolis on July 19th. The group discussed a possible CoSIDA DIII membership call with them at some point in August, the new NCAA Division III Academic All-America program that will kick off this coming fall, a CoSIDA/DIII presence at the upcoming NCAA convention in Indy this January and other ways for DIII-SIDA to continue to build their profile within the DIII national community and NCAA DIII operation/staff.
Division II
· Rich Herman, DII-SIDA's immediate Past President and CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik continued to work on an amended "DII Model Strategic Communications "document. That document discussion, which began last August, had been approved by the DII ADA, Conference Commissioners, DII-SIDA and DII Management Council but the DII President Council asked for some amended language. A conference call was held on July 19th with Herman, Humenik, Mike Racy- VP of NCAA DII, Fran Reidy of DII-ADA, Steve Murray of the DII Conference Commissioners Group and Dr. Drew Bogner (Malloy College) who is the Chair of the DII Presidents Council. That group sought to adjust some of the document's language to get it more in line with the DII Presidents' points/concerns. This amended document will now go back to the DII Presidents Council in August for review.
· John Humenik visited with Mike Racy, VP of NCAA DII, and Terri Steeb, Director of DII, in Indianapolis on July 19th. They discussed a possible conference call with them and CoSIDA's DII membership in August as well as the DII specific Academic All-America program that will kick-off this fall. They also discussed the upcoming NCAA Convention in Indianapolis this January and how CoSIDA's DII leadership could have some presence at that event.
Division I
· Shortly after the conclusion of the May 9th "DI Roundtable," membership continuing education program which included DI reps from CoSIDA and from the DI-A Athletic Directors Association, Dutch Baughman, the Executive Director of the D1-A ADA, indicated to John Humenik that this was a beneficial concept and expressed that he would like to do more such calls. Baughman proposed having these discussions on a quarterly basis. Baughman and Humenik are now in the process of seeing if the next "DI Roundtable" could be setup for August/September.
· On July 22nd, John Humenik and Barb Kowal provided the July version of "Communications Watch for Today's AD" to Dutch Baughman. This monthly newsletter, which was implemented last October after discussions between Humenik and Baughman, goes to all members of the D1A Athletics Directors Association directly from Baughman.

Academic All-America® Committee
· REMEMBER- Always, refer to our Academic All-America® program and its respective Academic All-District teams, Academic All-America® teams and Academic All-America® Hall of Fame, with our sponsor Capital One placed prior to all "Academic All-America" mention. · Academic All-America Co-Chair Mark Beckenbach (Ohio Wesleyan) visited with the staff of SIDEARM Sports in Syracuse in mid-July to work to finalize various aspects of the AAA online nomination process for the upcoming year which will see a full doubling of the AAA program from two national programs (University and College Division) to four (NCAA DI, NCAA DII, NCAA DIII, and College Division (NAIA, Canada and Two-Year institutions).
· The master schedule for the nomination deadlines/ team announcements for the 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-America® program will be available by mid-August. Information on the program can be accessed here: http://cosida.com/Awards/allamerica.aspx .
· The CoSIDA Board and Academic All-America® Committee leadership remind CoSIDA members that CoSIDA's "Academic All-America®" mark is federally registered. As such, CoSIDA members must help the Board and AAA Committee monitor the wrongful use of this registered trademark. If you see any other organizations, including coaching associations, using this registered trademark, immediately contact CoSIDA Executive Director John Humenik (jhumenik@bellsouth.net) and AAA Committee member Dick Lipe (Bentley University) at rlipe@bentley.edu. We will have our legal counsel, Collegiate Images, follow up with a letter regarding infringement of our federally registered mark and they will be asked to "cease and desist" from future use of that mark. · Many times during the year we find that our own membership is using "Academic All-America®" in releases that they prepare for student-athletes receiving academic achievement awards from other organizations - when in fact those organizations refer to their awards as "All-Academic," "Scholar-Athlete," "Academic All-Star," etc. We remind CoSIDA members be cognizant of only using "Academic All-America®" in relation to CoSIDA's program. There are NO exceptions and you should make sure your administrative staff and coaches understand that they do not have the right to take another award that is being presented for combined academic/athletic excellence by coach's associations/organizations and change it to "Academic All-America®" instead of its appropriate title as determined by that awarding organization. |

Survey/Research Based
· Joe Moore, a former SID at Central Missouri who is now a professor in that school's Communications Department, continued to work with John Humenik/Barb Kowal regarding his dissertation on "Earned Influence in Collegiate Sports PR: Why Some Have It and Others Don't" which has been endorsed by the CoSIDA Board and its divisional leadership groups. The Board feels that Joe's work, perhaps the most extensive ever conducted on this particular subject matter, can assist CoSIDA in the future with regard to possible strategic initiatives.
Moore indicated in mid-June that over 350 CoSIDA members have participated in the survey, conducted in early May. In early July Moore provided an executive summary of that survey data to Humenik and the 2011-12 CoSIDA Board. Moore indicated he will now be seeking AD input/thoughts via a survey and he will then be providing the final data/report at the 2012 CoSIDA Convention in St. Louis.
