Greetings Pet Lovers
Hello Friends!
Here in February, we find ourselves post-Super Bowl and post-Valentines Day, in the thick of an Indiana winter. I hope you are enjoying the weather. It's a good time to take stock and assess your health, happiness, and well-being, before the rush and bustle of the soon-to-come warmer months.
Speaking of warmth, Spring Break will be here before we know it (book your room early; we're working through the waiting list right now). We're already experiencing an unusually warm, snow-light winter, but Mother Nature could change that in a hurry, of course. In any case, see our story (below) on flea protection.
Meanwhile, it's a great time for a groom. It's a terrific time for training. And if your parents are heading off to more temperate climates, it's a bodacious time for boarding. And no time is the wrong time for some deep-muscle therapy.
When you're here at the Kennel, make sure to say hello and take a quick look-see around our always-changing facility.
Faithfully Yours,

Quentin Douglas

COME ON IN! Our entrance-way here at Zionsville Country Kennel has been re-configured. Notice the new signs out front clarifying the change. The Grooming and Boarding entrances have now been combined, and the other entrance is exclusively for Training and Kennel Camp. "Our previous set-up wasn't the most efficient or speedy," says Deb Douglas, kennel co-owner. "The new setup should provide a less cluttered, more efficient, and better focused layout as we introduce each of our clients to our various services." Additionally, Douglas reports that the Kennel "will be increasing our retail offerings on the Training and Kennel Camp side. We will be offering Eagle Pack Food, and various training aids... and maybe a few toys for our special friends." What does this change mean to you, our loyal patrons? Check-in for all services will be quicker and more efficient. Simple as that. And as important as that.

Flea Activity for Central Indiana

All cats and dogs are susceptible to flea infestations. You can help your pet win the war on fleas by knowing the local flea season, which is largely influenced by temperature and humidity. The following info from the Weather Channel illustrates when fleas are normally most likely to be active in our area:
Flea-Fighting Tips
Battling flea infestation requires patience and perseverance, so put on your armor and get to it! Because the life cycle of a flea is three to four weeks, it takes at least that long to completely rid your pet and its environment of the enemy. Different flea control products work in different ways, have varying levels of effectiveness, and kill different flea stages (eggs, larvae, and/or adults). You'll need to use a combination of products at the same time to be effective. Val can guide you, of course.
Dips, shampoos, powders, and sprays will usually kill the adult fleas on your pet. Using a flea comb regularly will help, too. But more adults may be lurking in your home or yard, and eggs or larvae may be lying in wait, as well. You'll need to rid your house of fleas by vacuuming and washing your pet's bedding once a week, and using a disinfectant on washable surfaces and an insecticide or insect growth regulator in cracks and crevices (sometimes foggers are recommended) every two to four weeks.

SPRING BREAK TRAINING
We haven't met a dog yet that didn't benefit from "foundation training," and now is the time to schedule your dog for training over Spring Break. Our award winning trainers can work with your dog to correct bad behavior, make her a better citizen, or just get him started off on the right paw.
Refresher training is available to all 'graduates' of our training programs, or if your 4-legged friend hasn't been exposed to basic obedience training yet, Board & Train or private lessons might be just the solution.
Visit our website at http://zionsvillekennel.com/services/training.php for more information, or call 317-769-6172 to schedule your free assessment today!
BBRRRRR! DON'T LET THE COLD WEATHER SLOW YOU DOWN
Muddy yards and cold temperatures are not good reasons to stay indoors with your dog this winter. Most dogs adjust to the cooler weather when given an opportunity, especially when they are busy playing with other dogs.
If you don't relish the task of taking your dog outside for her daily exercise, bring her to ZCK Kennel Camp. And on inclement weather days, your dog can get a quick shampoo and clean-up bath for only $9.
We always say...a tired (and clean) dog is a mighty wonderful thing!

Ahhhhhh . . . . . . You'll recall that Zionsville Country Kennel has recently begun offering deep-muscle therapy for your pet. The service, known as Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy, is offered every Monday, right in our facility, and the main focus has been for our boarding pets, but it is also available for the grooming clients as well as our friends in kennel camp. Amber Boston, our therapist, reports that "it's going great" and "we're helping a lot of pets relax and reduce the stress." We're certain you've been holding your breath in anticipation of a rundown of the benefits of deep-muscle for your pet, as promised in our last newsletter. Let's get to it! 1. Calms the dog or cat: it has been proven that dogs make more noise when they are restless or tense. Without regular deep-muscle treatments, your dog may be more aggressive than otherwise. 2. Eases aching muscles: deep-muscle therapy strengthens your dog's muscles and eases those muscles when they ache after exercise. 3. Increases immune system: deep-muscle therapy triggers chemicals that reduce stress - stress that can weaken the immune system. 4. Improves blood and lymph circulation: deep-muscle therapy stimulates blood circulation when then increases the oxygen that reaches tissues. 5. Disperses pain: treatments of this nature instruct the brain to release pain-killing endorphins. 6. Aids recovery: certain injuries can be helped with a good deep-muscle treatment, especially those that require restoration of mobility and flexibility. 7. Builds trust: the therapy helps build trust and makes you aware of subtle changes in your dog or cat's physical conditions. 8. Heightens concentration and alertness: regular deep-muscle work helps improve your dog's performance and concentration during obedience training 9. Promotes longevity: don't we all want our best friends to live a longer and ailment-free life? Boston adds that deep-muscle therapy can be done as frequently as twice weekly, or as seldom as monthly to see great improvements. Make sure you inquire about a therapy session for your pet next time you visit the kennel, or give us a call to schedule your appointment (317-769-6172). |

NOTE: when you drop your dog off for a groom, you will notice that the outside entrance to the building has been changed. Boarding and Grooming are now sharing an entrance. This set-up will make check-in quicker, simpler, and more efficient. Hooray!
OK, now for some "groomier" news. The unusually mild winter we're having is not entirely good news. Sure, most of us are delighted with the unseasonably warm and relatively precipitation-free weather, but for your pets, there's another factor at play: Fleas.
Fleas become an issue when the weather stays warm enough for them to thrive. According to Val Woodward, Zionsville Country Kennel's illustrious and much-in-demand groomer, flea season is greatly influenced by weather conditions such as temperature and humidity. The takeaway is simple: stick with those flea treatments, even in the winter!
