Build A Great Relationship With Yourself

Get a good start for the year by building a solid relationship with yourself.

For years you've been told that your most important relationship is with others, but in fact your most important relationship is with yourself. A solid relationship with yourself provides a solid foundation for achieving your goals as well as a solid foundation for building all the other relationships in your life.

Make it your New Year's Resolution to earn your own respect by treating yourself as a unique, mature human being with a life to live and dreams to fulfill.

HERE'S HOW TO GET STARTED:

1. Greet yourself. For the entire month of January, greet yourself in the mirror every morning. Look yourself in the eye, smile and say, "Good Morning, (address yourself by name)." Then say, "These are the things I love about myself and my life," and quickly recite:
  • Your positive qualities
  • The positive things you have done
  • The positive things you are looking forward to doing
  • The exciting things you plan to do that particular day
The first time you do this, it may take you more time to get in touch with each of these things, but after that they should come quickly to mind. This establishes a sense of self-respect and excitement to start off your day. And when you give yourself some attention at the beginning of the day, you are more prepared to go after your goals and greet all the other people in your life with assurance and a smile.

2. Make your goal-directed plans for the day. If you haven't already made a list of your plans for the day in your calendar, do it now. Making your daily plan is not an option - it's a necessity. Your daily plans are the DIRECTIONS FOR YOUR LIFE. Your daily plans should consist only of steps toward achieving your most important realistic goals. This will ensure that everything on your daily To Do List is tied to your highest goals, so you retain your motivation and enthusiasm even for the less exciting tasks.

3. Honor your plans. Stay true to your plans by actually carrying them out. Put a check mark by the ones you carry out and put an "x" mark by the ones you do not. Unless there is an emergency or an important unexpected opportunity, do not let anybody or anything get you off track. You earn greater self-respect and develop more confidence when you follow through with your daily plans - and you feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment as you check off each item on your list.

4. Discover how to stay on track. If you get off track, write down why and what for. Did you have to tend to another important goal? If not, ask yourself what you did instead, and if it was worth it. Was there something you wanted to do that you didn't plan for? If you forgot to schedule play time or health-related time, be sure to include that kind of time in your plans from here on. If you just got distracted, ask yourself what you can do next time to avoid getting distracted by things that are less important to you. If you ran out of time, you will have a more realistic picture of how to schedule your time when you make your plans for the next day. During this first month of practice, you will discover how to pace yourself so you can honor yourself by honoring your plans.

Try doing these four things every single day, and you will build a great relationship with yourself.
Always here to make your days more delicious,

Terry
