Are you mired in your past memories or frantically working for the future?
It's good to REMEMBER YOUR PAST... because you can learn from your past experience to be happier in the present. Think of the past as your best teacher.
It's good to PLAN FOR YOUR FUTURE ... because your today's future will be tomorrow's present. Setting meaningful goals ensures your long-term happiness.
But you must LIVE IN THE PRESENT... because now is the only time you can actually enjoy your life and do the things you want. Actively pursuing your values every minute ensures both your short and long-term happiness.
HERE'S HOW TO GET STARTED
On the first day of March:
1. Write down the most important things you've learned from the past.
2. Write down your most important goals for the future.
3. Write down one thing you will do today to enjoy yourself and one thing you will do today to make progress toward your longer-term goals. For example, I would write, "Play the fiddle" to enjoy myself today and "Finish Chapter 7 of my book" to make progress toward my longer-term goal. If your goals are chosen by you (and not somebody else) and if they are realistic, meaningful, and exciting to you, working toward your goals will make you feel exhilarated and fully alive.
4. ACTUALLY DO one thing to enjoy yourself today and one thing to make progress toward your longer-term goals. For me, this means that today I must actually play the fiddle and I must actually finish Chapter 7 of my book.
For the rest of the month of March, write down at least one thing you will do each day to enjoy yourself and at least one thing you will do each day to make progress toward your longer-term goals. Make sure you actually do each of those two things every single day.
You'll be surprised at how much happier and more alive you will feel, and you'll be delighted with how much more you can accomplish and how much more in control of your life you will be. |
