iReport -

Interior Department's  Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released preliminary data from what could be the largest wild horse population count in history.  The 9 day Tri-State population count which ended on June 28  was a  collaboration between  BLM and the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Preliminary or "raw" results show at least 4,200  wild/feral horses on about 4 million acres of public lands in portions of Nevada, California and Oregon.  The area surveyed includes 13 wild horse management areas (HMA's), 3 wild horse herd areas (HA's), and two National wildlife refuges.

Counting wild horses is not so simple as one two three. The methodology used can be complicated.  Population estimates in past years have  produced questionable results and  mustang guardians from the private sector have repeatedly pointed out substantial inconsistencies in the numbers.    Indeed, BLM officials have acknowledged they don't know how many mustangs are actually on the range. Since  these estimates are directly related to the number of animals deemed  "excess" thus removed from the range at a tremendous expense to both taxpayers and the animals themselves, reasonable accuracy is of utmost importance.
