September 2012
Visit Us At Our New Locations!

The Victim Service Center has moved! This month, we packed up our Winter Park office and opened our doors on East Michigan Street in Orlando (across from the Juvenile Justice Center).

If you've visited our office in the last several months, you've probably noticed that we've been bursting at the seams. We couldn't be more excited to find a location with greater space for our clients and advocates - allowing for greater efficiency in the services we provide.

We look forward to our new proximity to other essential government and community support programs and our ability to continue to meet the needs of victims in our area.

Our new address is: 2111 E Michigan St, Suite 210, Orlando, FL 32806. Our new office phone number is (407) 254-9415. Our Sexual Assault Hotline number remains (407) 497-6701.

In addition to our new Orlando office, we are pleased to announce a new location in Osceola County. Office visits are by appointment only.

National Campus Safety Awareness Month: Back to School Tips
In 2008, National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM) received support from Congress to be officially recognized throughout the month of September. Each year, the Clery Center for Security on Campus works with universities and colleges throughout the country to bring awareness to the safety issues most affecting students. The 2012 campaign is called "Safe Campus, Strong Voices."

According to the Clery Center, "Some current issues impacting college campuses are: high risk drinking, illegal drug use, prescription drug abuse, sexual assault, stalking, relationship violence, hazing, hate crimes, and fire safety."

"Campus safety must be a community effort - students, faculty, university employees, and parents must all work together to foster an environment where individuals treat each other with respect and intervene when harmful situations occur.

There are many different ways to be a good friend or bystander including:

  • making sure a friend that is under the influence of drugs or alcohol gets home safely
  • stopping a friend from pushing drinks on an individual who has made the decision not to drink or has had too much to drink
  • communicating your boundaries and respecting the boundaries of others
  • speaking up if someone makes a comment that is derogatory or abusive
  • distracting someone who is harassing a classmate by asking him/her a question or knocking something over
  • choosing not to participate in hazing and speaking out against destructive behaviors

Trust your instincts - the goal is to intervene in a way that is safe for you and those around you."

Thank You for the Rocking Chairs!
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Commissioner Scott Boyd of Orange County's District 1 and Just 1 Book for donating four rocking chairs to our Sexual Assault Treatment Center. We know that they will be a cornerstone in creating a calming environment for clients and family who visit our facility. Thank you!

September 25 is National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims

This event honors the lives of those taken by violence; publicly recognizes the impact of homicide on their surviving family members and friends; and pays tribute to those organizations that work with and provide services to survivors of homicide victims.
