National Night Out Is August 7
|
|
The "29th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), will take place on Tuesday, August 7, 2012.
 Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated. National Night Out is designed to: - Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
(This information and more on NNO can be found here.) VSC advocates will be attending several National Night Out events throughout Orange County in order to support the local communities, inform citizens about the services we provide to victims of crime, and raise awareness about our prevention program. We are thrilled to be a part of this important endeavor. |

Introducing Our New Team Members
|
|
The Victim Service Center would like to welcome Syr Rodriguez and Carolina Villegas to our team of advocates. We're proud to have two such accomplished women join our organization and know that they have a lot to contribute to our continued success.
 Syr will be working out of our new office in Osceola County. She moved to Orlando from San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1992 and began working with the Florida Highway Patrol as a Human Service Counselor in 2000. She helped to develop and then implement a Victim Advocacy Program for victims of crime and their families - the first Victim Advocate office for the Florida Highway Patrol in the entire state. Syr has a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Master's degree in Education in Guidance and Counseling. She loves to travel, especially to the Caribbean, as well as watch comedy movies, visit friends, and enjoy hispanic food and fine chocolate! According to Syr, "My most rewarding moments have been those when I assisted a family that lost a loved one in a tragic accident, and I was there to make a difference."
 Carolina Villegas is a UCF graduate who received a Master's degree in Social Work in 2010. Prior to arriving here, she worked with families in the community as a therapist and believes that, "agencies like VSC are important to the overall health of the community by responding to its needs through advocacy and awareness." In Carolina's spare moments, she likes to spend time with her pets and family.
Other staff changes: Additionally, we proudly report that Rhonda Wilson has taken over the position of Prevention Specialist, while Sarah Webb was promoted to Senior Advocate. We congratulate them as they embark on these new challenges and feel confident of the outstanding work they will continue to exhibit. |

Did you know that the Victim Service Center collects used cell phones for recycling?
We're a proud member of the Shelter Alliance, a socially responsible cell phone recycling program that donates money to nonprofits in exchange for mobile phones that are no longer in use.
Bring your phone to our office, and we'll take care of the rest!
