UnderAWARE Underwear Drive
All of April
In a forensic investigation, sexual assault survivors lose personal items when they are taken into custody for evidence. Please help us collect new items among your professional or social group by setting up a box for donations of sports bras, sweat pants, flip-flops, long sleeve shirts, women's and men's underwear, bed linens, and personal care items. We are also collecting monetary donations that will go towards providing victim services.
Please call our development team at 407.644.2577 or email jody.swain@ocfl.net to request a collection box for your group.

One Girl's Journey of
Growing Beyond Survival to Overcome
Everything changed in early February of 1993 when my life path was drastically obscured by the sudden arrival of the worst tragedy I would come to experience; I was brutally raped and left with a severe injury that required surgery by a man I knew and a fight for justice I was given no chance to win.
At the age 19 I was setting the foundation for career success in Communication and photography. I was beginning the second semester of college. By this point I had already suffered and survived a lot: being struck by a car at age 4, physical and mental abuse at home, molested by two neighbors before age 8 and was severely bullied starting in Middle School through my junior year of High School. These negative life events were behind me and I was working towards something new and positive. The person I had become had been shattered on the ground before me in a matter of minutes.
Yet something deep inside forced me forward. I was not going to be destroyed by this. I owned my destiny. This is what my past had taught me. I knew my path forward was going to be arduous. I had to not only survive, I had to overcome; a tall order that no one offered as an option to me at the time.
It was through divulging my experience to my mother and sister, at the time of my rape-kit exam had finished, that I learned both of them had been brutally raped. The most tragic part was that I was the only person they had ever told. This was the spark that ignited the fire inspiring me to open my story up to others to help them see they are not alone. My story was shared on the front page of the local newspaper only three months after I had been raped. That was the last time I spoke out and it saved one life that I knew about. I realized then that I still needed to heal before I could say anymore.
This is the second time I have shared my story but this time I have only begun to touch on what I have learned. At the age of 38 I have successfully overcome the effects of every tragedy I have endured. What gave me the tools to have a healthier more emotionally centered view of life was through giving myself permission to heal, photography, communication and some added therapy near the end where I needed some direction. These components provided the scaffolding from which I was able to gain a new perspective on my life; I had to do hard work to rebuild how I saw my life in a positive way.

The Inspiration Behind
the Victim Service Center's
Ride to Reach Event
Diana Oakley invites you to join us
Saturday, April 28, 9AM to 1PM
April 28th...Is there anybody else out there that thinks of April 28th as significant? Is there anybody else out there that counts the days in April until the 28th is upon them? I used to think of April 28th as a day of mourning. I would mope around all day feeling sorry for myself. I would think about all of the directions my life might have taken if only I had stayed home on April 28, 1991 instead of taken that infamous bike ride. If only I hadn't gone off on my own that day, then maybe I wouldn't have been kidnapped. It has been twenty years since I was abducted and raped. I have lived most of those years in fear of a man who is behind bars. I have been letting him control me still. Because of him, I thought I would never be a "normal" person. I thought I was damaged beyond repair. I didn't think I could be helped. But I have come a long way since April 28, 1991. And while today is still a day of reflection and sadness for me, it has evolved into a day of joy as well; a day of joy because I am no longer that broken little girl who cowers in corners; a day of joy because I have learned how to deal with my pain instead of suppress it; a day of joy because if this never happened to me I might not have turned to God for help; a day of joy because I have finally learned how to forgive. Twenty years is a long time for someone to hide their pain. If you happen to be one of the millions of people in this country who are hiding their pain behind a smile, I want you to know that you are not alone! I spent half of my life hiding behind a smile, and I do not recommend it. So let's transform April 28. Instead of it being the anniversary of the day I was kidnapped, raped, and almost murdered, let's make it a day of transformation, hope, and forgiveness. We cannot allow what has happened to us to define who we are. I am so much more than the girl who was raped. You are so much more than the mother who has lost her child. And you are so much more than the wife and the daughter of a monster. Come out and join me and show your support on Saturday, April 28, 2012 for the Victim Service Center's 1st annual Ride to Reach, where I will be sharing the stage for the first time with the daughter and ex-wife of my kidnapper. Above excerpts taken from Intended Harm. You can also meet the author and purchase the book at the event. |

The VSC Sexual Assault Hotline earned a 100% rating on our March monitoring report! |
Start by Believing is a public awareness campaign designed to change the way we respond to rape and sexual assault in our communities.
There is no shame when your loved one dies. When your car is stolen. When you're diagnosed with cancer. Friends and loved ones gather around you for support. They don't blame you for "bringing it on yourself." It should be the same with sexual violence. But all too often, survivors who have the courage to tell someone what happened are blamed for bringing it on themselves. This needs to change. Won't you join us? |
