 Welcome to
 Gately Community Connections!

The Gately Funeral Home has been serving the families of Melrose and surrounding communities since 1889 in the tradition began by my great-grandfather John Henry Gately.

Our community has grown over the years and it is not as easy to stay connected with those whose opinions, information, and counsel we rely on. Gately Community Connections is our quarterly newsletter that we trust will keep us connected and give us opportunities to share information and valuable resources.

Each newsletter will include a Frequently-Asked Question (FAQ) section intended to inform and clarify a variety of issues that confront people when they begin to consider end-of-life concerns.

We will be featuring articles by local experts in specialized fields including estate planning, hospice news and information, veterans' affairs and more. We invite you to participate by submitting timely news articles to our Community Bulletin Board. Simply send your news to info@gatelyfh.com.

Gately Supports the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days!

At the Gately Funeral Home we are excited to announce that we're supporting the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer by participating in a unique fundraising campaign called Daffodil Days.

Daffodil Days is one of the American Cancer Society's oldest and most beloved fundraising programs. Since 1973, Daffodil Days has empowered people to help save lives from cancer by raising funds and awareness to help beat the disease.

Click on this link to visit our Gately American Cancer Society Daffodil Days page:http://www.gatelyfuneralhome.com to learn more about this campaign and to donate to Daffodil Days. The site includes a list of beautiful items available in exchange for donations, including everything from fresh-cut daffodils to an adorable Daffodil Days Boyds® by Enesco® Bear.

By giving daffodils or other beautiful gifts to friends, family members, and even cancer patients, you're really giving hope and helping to save lives by supporting the American Cancer Society. Their on-going work helps people get well and stay well by finding cures, and by fighting back against a disease that takes too much.

Every dollar truly counts, especially in times like these when people need our help more than ever. For as little as $10 you can give a bunch of daffodils to brighten someone's day!

Thank you in advance for helping save lives with any support you can provide!

Flowers will be delivered to Gately Funeral Home at 79 West Foster Street in Melrose the week of March 22nd. Orders must be placed by March 5, 2010.

 Frequently Asked Questions

 "What options are available when
 choosing cremation?"

There are several options for you to consider when cremation is your choice. The first is to determine what type of funeral or memorial service is desired and whether it should be held before or after the cremation.

Once you know what type of service you wish to have, you have choices regarding a visitation.  You may not wish to have a visitation of any kind.  Many families find a visitation very comforting, as it provides a time for family and friends to gather together.  If you have the visitation before cremation, you may choose one with an open casket.

If you prefer to have a funeral or memorial service after cremation -- an option here is to have the cremated remains present in an urn or other special container. At Gately Funeral Home, we have a beautiful solid cherry, glass enclosed ark display to hold the cremated remains during visitation and church services. Many have commented that the ark brings dignity to cremation.

Many families choose to preserve their loved one's remains in an urn to keep at home and pass down to the next generation. Others want to bury the remains and some elect to spread the ashes in a special place that may be particularly meaningful. Still others elect to use a biodegradable urn that can be placed in water. There may be laws that govern where, how, and when remains can be spread, so this option needs further consideration.

In the recent past, other options have become available after cremation. One is to place a small amount of the remains in a piece of "memory" jewelry. A pendant or ring with a small opening is used to hold the ashes and can be worn by a family member.

One of the important things to remember is that choosing cremation does not limit your ceremonial choices in any way. In fact, many families choose to have a traditional visitation before cremation. Having the deceased's body present gives a sense of acceptance and closure and provides a way for the family to have a memorable final farewell.

Visitation and a church service followed by the burial of the urn at the cemetery avoid a delay in the interment of cremains. Many cemeteries in the area will allow urns to be interred in family lots that are full due to casketed burials. Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose allows one casket and three urns in each grave.

If you or a family member is considering cremation, you should be sure to write down your instructions in detail. A funeral director will be able to guide you through your options so your final wishes will be followed.
