It was so nice to see many of you at the Chancellor's holiday open house this week. Chef Stacy Meyer and her students did a wonderful job in preparing, displaying and serving us all. Our District Office staff, in particular, Maria Torres and Nancy Green, set-up the Board Room to look very festive. Alisa Moore took many pictures which can be accessed on my Facebook account at this link:

I feel very fortunate to work at SBCCD. As I've said before, there will always be challenges. But we need to stay positive and stay focused and we will continue to move forward. My mom always told me that nothing worth having comes easy. I always enjoyed the television show, Scrubs. Here is a brief clip that highlights that point.
Scrubs - It doesn't come easy
SBCCD will be the best community college district in the state. I believe that working together, we can achieve anything.
There are thieves in the neighborhood this week and they stole a large quantify of copper pipe from the KVCR signal tower. They actually cut through the chain link fence to steal the materials.
Cut copper pipe at Media Building.
We expect the cost to repair to be about $15,000. This will come out of our self-insurance fund because we cannot file a claim that is below $25,000.
The good news is that the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department arrested two men in the process of stealing copper from a nearby facility who had some of our materials in their possession.
Working in partnership with the Latino Faculty, Staff and Administrators Association (LFSAA), the Chancellor has established an Advisory Committee to discuss issues of concern to the Latino community. The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to build bridges, to facilitate communication and collaboration and to discover new ideas to benefit our students.
The Advisory Committee can also help to provide input on pending legislation and support organizations such as HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities). The Committee will include SBCCD faculty, staff, administrators and students as well as a community representative.
Enrollment Update and Student Success
For 2011-2012, the state funded the District for 13,064 FTES, which is over 1,000 less than in 2010-2011. In our budget, we funded 13,456 FTES which is an unfunded FTES of 392. This is being funded by the monies set aside in the District's budget for "access".
Based on further meetings with Chancellor's Cabinet, we have decided to fund an additional 20 sections at each campus and raise our FTES limit to 13,606, of which 542 are unfunded. We decided to not increase access beyond that goal based on our budget meeting with the Board in September, where it became very clear that increased access without the appropriate student support services will just result in lower student success numbers. This sentiment was clearly supported by the Faculty Senate.
Early next year, we will be presenting to the Board the student success initiatives that the colleges are putting into place for the spring semester.
As part of our 2011-2012 budget we have also set aside funding for student success. Part of this initiative will come from various grant funding and part will come from the general fund.
District Office Business Process Analysis and Improvement Starts Next Week
Next week, we will start Business Process Analysis and Improvement. We will analyze, in great detail, all the steps it takes us to perform the business and human resource functions "requisition through issuance of checks" and "first day on the job through day of separation from the District."
Once the entire process has been documented and analyzed, the next step will be to envision and put in place a new and more efficient process. This process will ultimately prepare us to fully implement a District-wide Enterprise Resource application which will fully integrate all of our current "silo" environments including Payroll, Budget, Human Resources, and Students.
We will keep you informed at we move forward with this work.
Thanks to all of the staff who have volunteered to share their expertise and ideas with the facilitators to make the way we work more effective and efficient. The names of the members of each work group are available by clicking on the links below.
