Female Fire Chiefs Make Historical Visit to CGLA

CGLA students meet the first African American female fire chiefs. From left to right: CGLA 10th grader, Tatanya Trotter, Chief Toni Dixson (Decatur, GA), CGLA 10th grader, Alexis Grant, Chief Teresa Everett (College Park, GA), and Chief Debra Pryor (Berkley, CA).

CGLA students witnessed history when the school hosted three of the first African American female fire chiefs on November 3rd - the first time these women had ever come together for a meeting. The fire chiefs, who were in town for the International Association of Black Firefighters Conference November 3-6, chose to meet at CGLA in hopes of inspiring CGLA students to establish goals and to achieve their lifelong dreams. "To be successful, you have to have discipline, good habits, and focus," East Point, GA, Fire Chief Rosemary Cloud told CGLA students. The chiefs toured CGLA and met with students to share their success stories and the ways in which they have been able to overcome obstacles in their male dominated careers.

CGLA Honors Students Walk About the City to Explore Science

Science teacher Nancy Olenchek teaches CGLA students about color and light theory at Shuptrine Fine Arts Gallery.

CGLA honors students experienced science first-hand as they "walked about" Chattanooga on October 27th with science teacher Nancy Olenchek. The learning expedition was the second of a series of scheduled "Walk Abouts" planned to extend students' learning experiences beyond the walls of CGLA and introduce students to local community resources. Students spent approximately 45 minutes at each of the partnering businesses, which included Shuptrine Fine Art Gallery (to study color and light theory) and Stone Source (to review rock types and discuss the engineering process). Businesses and organizations interested in partnering with CGLA on future science "Walk Abouts" can contact Nancy Olenchek at (423) 702-7230 or nancyolencheck@cglaonline.com.

CGLA students learn about rock types and the engineering process for various stone products at Stone Source.

Poetry Out Loud at CGLA

CGLA 10th grader, Tatanya Trotter, practices poetry recitation with visiting artist Pacer Harp.

CGLA students will be honing their language arts, public speaking, poetic recitation and dramatic performance skills throughout November as they prepare for a school-wide Poetry Out Loud competition on December 3rd. The program was launched on November 5th when CGLA hosted two visiting artists to help students prepare for the competition. Matthew Brown, a writing and literature professor from Middle Tennessee State University, and Pacer Harp, managing director of the Gaslight Dinner Theatre and Faraday Science Theatre at the Residence Center in Dickson, TN, offered workshops structured around Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" from Leaves of Grass. Winners of the school-wide competition, who become eligible to submit entries in the state-wide competition, will be announced in the December e-newsletter.

This project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Arts Commission.

CGLA Students Appear in Documentary

CGLA students who have participated in expeditionary learning through Mustang Leadership Partners, an organization which seeks to protect, preserve, and sustain the wild American mustang, appear in a segment of a documentary to premiere this month. Focusing on the wild mustang's survival and struggles as resources diminish,  Untamed Legacy: America's Wild Mustang chronicles a mustang named Charlie on his journey from the wild to his new home in Alabama, and all the people whose lives he touches along the way - including CGLA students. The community is invited to a preview party hosted by WTCI (producing station of the documentary) on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. Admission is free but limited seating is available; RSVP to secure a seat: (423) 702-7814. The documentary will premiere on WTCI on Thursday, November 18 at 8 p.m.

Team Building Through Community Art

CGLA students decorate a banner during a Community Art Day team building event at Coolidge Park, sponsored by True North Custom Publishing

On October 29th a group of CGLA students participated in a community art project at Coolidge Park with employees of Sunshine Media Group (SMG) for the company's annual team building retreat. CGLA was selected as one of just five local schools or youth organizations to participate in the project and received a $2,500 donation from SMG to support CGLA's arts related programming. Groups of 3-4 CGLA students were paired with 3-4 SMG team members to create a painted banner that represented the team's collective vision of a healthy community. At the conclusion of the day's activities, 35 banners were ceremonially unfurled from the Walnut Street Bridge. Providing an expeditionary learning opportunity, the community art project taught CGLA students team building and leadership skills under the mentorship of a group of local professionals. Thank you to Sunshine Media Group and RedPoint Management for engaging CGLA girls with this event!

Research to Action: Collaboration
 and Learning

A review of research studies that involved the recruitment and retention of women engineers found the key to attracting more women and minorities into engineering is to make teaching more learner- centered (Society of Women Engineers, 2007). CGLA's expeditionary learning approach engages girls in hands-on, exploratory, project-based learning experiences that are best-suited to the learning needs and preferences of girls.
