CGLA's New Executive Director!

After conducting a rigorous, nationwide search, the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy is delighted to announce the appointment of Anita Bordeaux as the school's Executive Director.

A long-term advocate for alternatives and choice in education, Bordeaux is a veteran educator who has demonstrated commitment in serving families and meeting individual student needs. Bordeaux has a proven track record in administration, teacher coaching, and professional development in public charter schools in Atlanta, New York City, Milwaukee, and Washington, DC.  She earned a Bachelors of Arts in History and a Masters of Arts in Education from Michigan State University. Bordeaux also earned certification in Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins University in partnership with the International Society of Technology Educators (ISTE).

Though she began on April 5 during CGLA's spring break, Bordeaux formally met CGLA students on April 12.  Interim Co-Directors Maxine Bailey and Julie Davidson look forward to working closely with Ms. Bordeaux as they resume their roles as Executive Director of the Young Women's Leadership Academy Foundation (YWLAF), CGLA's fundraising arm, and CGLA's Dean of Faculty, respectively.

DR. SHOCK ELECTRIFIES
CGLA SCIENCE CLASSROOMS

Dr shock and students

With support from EPB, CGLA students had an electrifying experience in their science classrooms.  Dr. Shock, EPB's Hosea Pierce, captivated girls with lessons on circuits, guiding them through creation of simple, parallel, and series circuits.  Through a hands-on lesson in which students created each type of circuit, students gained authentic experience with the scientific process while achieving learning competencies related to circuits and the transfer of energy. Experiential science activities help to shatter stereotypes and misconceptions about girls' abilities in science that often stymie girls from pursuing science careers.

CGLA SCIENCE NIGHT

CGLA students and family members joined together as scientists at the school-wide science night on March 16.  Girls and family members plied the scientific process through a rotation of eleven experiment stations designed to enrich learning in standards-based science competencies.  Science night activities provided an opportunity for girls to document their science learning achievements through project-based experiments.  Girls and families explored topics including optics, biome and environmental science, nutrition, and chemistry.

Lee University

LEE UNIVERSITY VOLUNTEERS HELP CGLA A.C.T. UP

In preparation for college, CGLA 9th graders spent two Saturdays in March learning with guidance from volunteers from Lee University.  Organized by Angie Markum, CGLA Algebra I Specialist, these activities enhanced girls' academic skills and college-readiness.  Lee University students offered a rotation of informational sessions including preparation for achievement examinations (including the ACT and end-of course exams) and college planning.  In addition to providing peer-to-peer college planning support, Lee students, representing Nepal, Nigeria, the Bahamas, and the Navajo Nation, introduced students to the global diversity of college campuses.  Many thanks to Lee's Dean of Students, Dr. Carolyn Dirksen, for preparing the activities of the day and providing each CGLA student with a novel by Alexandria LaFaye, and to the Nehemiah Project for providing lunch for all the participants.
